Teaching in Japan

Has anyone ever taught English in Japan or lived/worked there for any significant amount of time? I'm looking to teach English there for about a year. I see there are a lot of programs online, but can anyone recommend a program or a city that would be good to live in for a year?

I don't have much money to spend since I'm planning to go after college graduation. So I'm ideally looking for a teaching gig where they set you up with an apartment and some sort of a stipend or pay.

Thanks!

I'm going on a 2 week vacation in Australia and New Zealand. I have questions!

Hi! So, I've always wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand. I am taking 2 weeks off of work. Probably November 22nd-December 6th. I live in the US. I feel like I need a starting point, and then I can plan my trip more in depth.

My plan is to fly into Australia. Stay there for a few days. Then fly to New Zealand and be there for the next week and a half. As of now I plan on traveling by myself and stay in hostels. I am 29M, and in good hiking/outdoors shape. My goal was to keep the trip around 3k-4k. It seems my flight will be around 2k of it.

I'm not sure I can decide between Melbourne and Sydney. I love big cities and touristy things, but I also love art, culture and outdoors. Because I think I'll enjoy New Zealand more, I feel like I can only pick one city in Australia.

Once I'm in New Zealand, is it best to rent a car and be able to have flexibility as I drive down the coast? Or should I use public transit?

Anyway, if anyone can give me a suggested outline of my 2 week trip, it would be very helpful. As long as I have a starting point, I can figure out everything else. My interests for both places are:

-Outdoors/hiking/wildlife

-Scuba Diving

-Shark Diving in New Zealand with Shark Experience

-Touristy things. Zoos. Museums. Tasty food.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

I want to move to Canada to live with my wife.

I recently eloped (July 28, 2014) while she was visiting America. We had been talking about living together for a while, but neither of us did any research or pre-planning. At the moment, money isn't the issue. The problem is how overwhelming the process of becoming dual citizen seems.

So far, what I've gathered is:

  • She has to become a sponsor by filling out all these

  • She will have to pay a fee online here

  • I would have to apply and pay the fees for permanent residency in Canada here

  • I would have to apply for a working permit here

The information I seem to be at a loss for is:

  • Is it possible to complete the full process while on a visitors visa?

  • How long would this take?

  • How much will the fees cost in total?

Any extra information you may think of will greatly be appreciated.

Has anyone completely uprooted themselves and moved to a different state/country where they knew no one?

So basically in exactly a year from now I am planning to leave everything and everyone I know in Atlanta, Georgia and go to Seattle. I don't really have any expectations. Maybe hoping to get a job. My goal for the trip is to stay as long as I can. If I can get a job and support myself I'll stay. If I run out of money I'll just come back home.

Basically, if you've done something like this do you have any words of wisdom to give to someone doing the same things?

EDIT: For clarification. I'll be leaving next summer, July 31 from Atlanta, georgia. I planned to have at least $3,000 saved by then. I'm pretty much just looking for advice from people who have done similar things. As far as lodging I will either sleep in my car, in a hotel, or couch surf. If this post isn't appropriate for this sub can a mod please let me know?

Crossing into USA from Canada with some fine art. Any idea what to expect?

I'll be in Canada towards the end of August and my father is gifting me some signed Dali lithographs that have been in the family for years. Whats likely to happen at the border, if anything, when I declare them? Does it matter that they are a gift? We are not sure of their exact monetary value, but I know they're not cheap. I'm just feeling anxious because we want to get them to the states and can't afford paying a fee to get them there.

Nearly 40; Looking to finish my education overseas. Not sure where to start.

American here. Late 30s. I dropped out of community college after two semesters because I got a pretty good job offer.

Now, nearly 20 years later, I find myself able to work remotely from almost anywhere in the world. In fact, I'm in Europe for the rest of the summer.

I got to thinking that I'd like to finish up a degree of some sorts. Where should I start? I'm not in a position to spend a lot of money, so maybe Europe is out of the question. Is it possible for someone my age to get a bachelor's degree in a foreign country or do visa requirements set a certain age limit?

I guess I should add that I'm mostly interested in languages and history and would actually like to teach English.

Where would you begin looking? Should I just do something online?

Thanks!

Suggestions for a 4 day to 1 week length trip!

My best friend is turning 20 this year and I just convinced him to give me a set amount of money to plan a trip for him. At this point he is just super bummed about turning 30 and I would thoroughly enjoy planning this trip!

We agreed on a $1000.00 budget for the whole thing, however we could probably go over that slightly. Below are the details!

Starting point: We are in Seattle, so SEATAC airport Ideas considered so far: Alaska, Iceland - Any ideas for what we could do there would be awesome

What he doesn't like: Flights (he can suck it up for the most part, but obviously being on a flight for 12 hours isn't going to be a smart idea), THE SUN (I am not kidding, he HATES the sun, but will tolerate it for the right things, such as zip-lining), heat (his ideal temp is somewhere between 62 degrees F and 67 degrees F) and the beach (because he hates the sun), hikes, and boats (he claims to get sea sick, however I have only witnessed car-sickness)

What he likes: Being lazy (but not on a beach), "adventurous" activities , and "cool" activities.

Now that I put this down in writing, I am not sure how easy this will be to find, but I am sure Reddit can help me out!

His birthday is December 19th, and since neither he or I travel home for Christmas, I was thinking we could either go during that week, or the week after.

Thanks!

Have you ever visited gaza?

If so, what was it worth the trouble (if any)? Is it hard to get an entry visa (in case you needed one)? Would you recommend this to others looking for a real off the beaten path experience?

Any good suggestions to record the countries you have visited?

I'd love to hear suggestions on a physical way (i.e. not an online tool) of keeping track of the countries I have visited in a tasteful way. Preferably something I can have on display and admire, rather than in a book for instance. Thanks in advance guys.

What are the best Hostels you have stayed at in the US, and what made those hostels so awesome, in your opinion?

7 week elective in Japan

Hey guys, as part of my degree I need to plan somewhere to spend 7 weeks in another country. Ideally I'd like somewhere I could do a little traveling (I'll have weekends, maybe a week block) and somewhere that matches my interests. I've narrowed it down to Japan (ideally) or Vietnam.

I've heard a lot of things that worry me about japan, particularly relating to cost (I'd have loved Tokyo..) and weather (it would be summer months). So essentially, what would 7 weeks in Tokyo cost me? What are the alternative cities where I could have an awesome time (maybe a beach too) and experience japan, with maybe a weekend or so in Tokyo?

Thanks!

What are your experiences staying at Hostels during the Winter?

I am considering going to either Philadelphia or Boston during January. The harsh weather isn't an issue (I'm from LA, and would like to experience snow for once), but I am worried I am going to arrive in an empty or almost empty hostel, and will have to tour the city by myself (not the safest thing to do, especially in a city like Philadelphia).

Ever escape for Thanksgiving/Christmas?

So this Christmas I have about 10 days off but nowhere to really go yet. I initially took timeoff to join a friend in her native homeland, but now I realize that she is in a bit of an immigration snafu and may not be able to get a renewed green card in time to leave the country. She hasn't bought a ticket and I'm certainly not buying one because I would prefer to go with her.

Trying to think up some other places to head out to, but would love to hear about you skipping a holiday to escape the norm(read: your family).

I think I might check out Australia, Istanbul or Colombia. All which would be pricey from Phoenix, but whatever. I'll spend the money to go.

Schengen visa duration of stay question

I have recently received my Schengen visa and the duration of stay is 11 days valid till 8/24 which would suit the trip schedule I presented to the consulate. I then decided to reschedule my trip as a friend of mine will be joining me so I can now stay for 18 days on the same budget.

My question is can I stay longer than the duration listed in the visa and leave before the 24th ? Will I have to pay any fines ? Is my passport going to be checked every time I'm flying in the Schengen area ?

Hostel Padlock Size.

This might seem a little elementary, but I can't to find out what size of padlock is required for a typical hostel locker. Google seems to return only people with stories of buying padlocks that were too big, which isn't much help.

My search did lead to a 'Pacsafe RetractaSafe', but the security of this seems even more dubious than that of a padlock, which would at least require a thief to carry a conspicuous bolt cutter.

Looking for some cheap methods of traveling from the US to Asia! Even strange methods work!

I've heard awesome stories of people who have been hired for temporary positions with fishing companies and traveled with them to other countries, other stories of people who biked the panamerican highway and then found various means to get to travel around Asia. I'm plan on traveling to Japan where I have family I will stay with, but I'd like the traveling to be exciting and I know this is the subreddit to ask!

Any and all methods would be great, especially those with experience and possible links! I'm well aware of common couch surfing sites like Airbnb and Couchsurfing but any others would be awesome to include.

Thanks in advance

Need some help, central Europe

Hey there,

I've planned my trip up to Budapest (leaving september 12th). I had originally thought of Krakow next, and finally Prague. From Prague I've already booked the flight back to London on the 20th.

Thing is, and please prove me wrong if you should, Krakow doesn't look that interesting. It seems dull and grey. Or at least, not worthy of the 4 days I had allocated to it.

I'm really interested in seeing Auschwitz so I was thinking that perhaps you guys could help me. I could either replan everything in between Budapest and Prague and not visit Auschwitz and visit other places.

I could also go to Krakow, and then do another city for two days. I'd save time by traveling during the night. Looking at a map I have some choices, but honestly no idea which one looks good.

Can anybody help me? I guess going to Warsaw wouldn't be too sensible seeing as I'd be heading even further away from Prague, unless it's really good. Perhaps Warclow, or visiting Brno or another city in Czech Republic?

Thanks everybody in advance :). I'm sort of lost when it comes to these countries, I don't know anything about them!

Want to combine niagra and fall colors in a late september trip to NY. Am i stupid?

I have some out-of-country visitors who are here till Oct 1st week or so, and one must-see in their list is Niagra falls. I really want to see fall colors in the east coast this time. ( I am not in US in october) I was thinking that I could combine fall colors and niagra in one trip by going to Niagra in Sept-end. From sites like these it seems that in Catskills and Chautauqua / Allegheny i should be able to see fall colors in Sept end. But fall color reports from last year tells me that colors happened in October mainly. Please help.. I live in Cincinnati,OH.

What's the perfect one-day itinerary in Paris?

I'm taking my mom and sister to Europe and we'll only have 24 hours in Paris (in additional to a week in England and Scotland). What's your perfect one-day itinerary for someone who's never been to Paris? We'll be there in late September from about noon on a Thursday to noon on a Friday.

What's your favorite translator app for traveling to China?

Google Translate is my personal favorite, but I hear that Google is not accessible in China. Does anyone have recommendations?

Asking for co-workers who will be visiting China soon. I asked which type of Chinese and they said Mandarin... Also we are coming from California and our primary language is English.

SHUTTLE LIFE

I'm about to buy a shuttle bus, renovate the inside, and live in it with two of my friends. Any advice on any step of this journey will be very appreciated. We are looking at the shuttle today. It is a 1990 Ford e350 econoline. If you want to know more about the back story it's below. Thanks!

I'm tired of stressing out about my career, rent, and any other expenses. I'm tired of giving into the pressures of whats expected of me. I feel like i'm stuck in my own personal groundhog day of hell right now. The bottom line is I'm unhappy. So I have decided to do something about it!

Me and two of my friends are embarking on a journey through Canada to Alaska to see what we always wanted to see, the aurora borealis! We have a lot of challenges along the way. We are spending the last of our savings buying the bus. We still have to renovate it and fundraise/take odd jobs to pay for the gas and renovation ect. But it all starts today. We are selling everything we own and quitting our jobs and buying the shuttle today!!! I'll let you know how it goes.

solo for a 4-5 nights in Croatia, looking for an island stay: Hvar or Korcula?

hey guys, I'm gonna be in Croatia near the end of August and kind of wanted to hole up on an island for a few days. I'm traveling solo so I'm looking for a nice mix of bustle and relaxation (could stay in one of the towns but would love some opportunity to hike / relax on a quieter beach). Both of these islands looked awesome. What would you guys pick? Open to other suggestions as well

thanks!

Two lads going to Budapest for a week. Places and things to do??

We need some suggestions on things to do that will stimulate all of the senses! Places to go, things to hear and see, food to eat, smells to smell! We are both single and enjoy plenty of beer so f anyone knows of any great nightspots then that would be awesome as well! Thanks!!!

How to use netflix while in Europe??

Hello friends! I am a US citizen traveling to several countries in Europe during the month of August. I was wondering if anyone knows how to access netflix while in another country on an iPad? I have not found much helpful information online in my research. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Want to spend September experiencing national parks and craft breweries. Does anyone have advice?

We (2 guys) would leave Minnesota by car on September 1st.

Length: We planned for a month, but if another week or two would greatly improve things, so be it.

Budget: We're trying to do it somewhat frugally, and plan to camp most nights. Stocking up on non-perishables from Costco before we begin. If something is awesome and worth doing, we will spend the money.

Interests: Hiking, seeing the sights, and delicious beer. We're not going to do any mountain climbing, but nor are we afraid of a reasonably strenuous hike.

Basically, what I'm looking for from you all is advice on which are the most important national parks to hit, and how long we should spend in each to adequately appreciate it. Yellowstone is a must, but we had also hoped to hit Arches, Yosemite, Crater Lake, etc. Most of the breweries we had planned to hit are in California (Sierra Nevada, Russian River, Lagunitas, Anchor Brewing, Firestone, The Bruery, Stone, Alesmith).

Thanks for your insight.

One-way ticket into Japan. Will they allow me in?

Hey /r/Travel,

So I was lucky enough to get in on the Priceline super pricing error allowing me to fly from JFK to Milan Italy, then from Prague to Tokyo all for $323. I'll be leaving in November, and have been working tirelessly trying to learn as much as I can to make sure this trip goes as smoothly as possible!

However, to my dismay, I found the other day that there's a distinct possibility that my airline may refuse to take me from Prague to Japan because I'm yet to purchase an return or onward ticket out of Japan. Apparently the country holds the airline responsible for anyone they bring into the country who does not meet guidelines set for tourists entrance.

My original plan was to stay there (less than 90 days of course) until I felt it was time to go. I'm yet to decide if I want to extend my trip into NZ, or possibly head back into Europe. I don't want to be forced to rush my decisions if I can help it. Unfortunately, it looks like that may not be the best option to go with.

I've read about people making reservations to take the ferry from Japan to Korea and then canceling it once they are safely within Japan. I've also read about people booking outward tickets with airlines that offer full refunds.

I will definitely look into these options, but I wanted to hear what you more experienced travelers had to say first. I'll be taking three different carriers on my way to Japan, but I believe the only one who holds my fate in their hands is KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines. They will be the ones taking me from Prague>Amsterdam>Tokyo.

So my question is, has anyone flown with this airline before? If so, have you ever done so with just a one-way ticket.

I've done quite a bit of research, but I can't seem to find any definitive information regarding their policy towards passengers with one-way tickets. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read through this!

Vacationing in St. Maarten for a week this August. What should I expect? Any tips for the area?

I will be staying in a beach villa for 6 days during the week. I know to expect it to be very hot. But what should I go out to do? Any spots to cliff dive, enjoy a nice view, or enjoy the environment?

Budget trip for a college kid to Costa Rica for ten days

Me and my friend are starting to plan a trip for Costa Rica in December. We plan staying on the east coast for ten days with an $800 budget not including airfare. We plan on staying in hostels and eating cheap to keep our costs down. Right now we are looking at going to Monteverde for a day or two then spending most of our time in Puerto Viejo and possibly hitting up Cahuita as well. Is there any other places we have time to got to while we are there?

Need help finding a ticket site where I can filter out layovers by country.

My Chinese gf is flying from China to Toronto but most of the flights layover in the US. The US requires transit visas even if you're just laying over so we're trying to find a site where we can say 'Don't show any results that have layovers in XYZ country.'

Want to Travel to France On My Own, I'll Be 18

I've always loved French culture and the French language and I'll be turning 18 next January, so I figured I would try to make a trip to France. Besides family vacations across a few states, this will be my biggest and longest trip. It will also be the first time I have flown in an airplane. Is this too much for an 18 year old on his own? Also, how much should I try to save up for a good trip? I know a plane ticket is probably close to $2,000 from Detroit to Paris but beyond that, I have no clue what to expect. I don't even know if I want to go to Paris. It's a tossup between Paris, Lyon, or Bordeaux. I know a bit of French, and I'll probably learn more before then. So what I want to know is if this would be too big of a trip for a first timer who is 18, and what should I expect and how much should I save up for a good trip (preferably close to a week long)?

Also, there is a possibility of maybe taking one friend with me but that would mean he (or I) would need to save money for himself.

Hi, we're 2 single 23 year old males looking to travel to Europe for 10 days for night-life, adventure, and sight-seeing. What cities do you recommend any why?

A vague question so I'll try to go in more detail. We're 2 23 year olds who have to take 10 days off in the next 3 months. We admittedly know close to nothing about Europe. When I was a kid I visited Ireland and Greece but was too young to fully appreciate the trips.

We're single and looking to have fun so night-life (and attractive women!) is a big factor in our decision. What are the must-go-to cities? Has anyone done a great 10 day trip that they could recommend? Any advice would be great.

Thank you.

Marseille to Barcelona Tips Needed

Hey fellow travellers,

I recently got divorced (m/29) and am planning a trip to clear my head. I have a trip intinerary in mind and would like some tips on what I should visit & how I should get around the south of France and Spain.

So far this is what I have in mind - Arrive in Marseille on the 30th of September and spend the next 8-10 days travelling down to Barcelona and flying back to Asia between the 8th & 10th of October.

I'm looking for bit of advice on the following:

  1. I would like to spend 3-4 days in Marseille and 3-4 days in Barcelona. Is this unrealistic if I only have 10 days or so to travel?

  2. Would it be best to rent a car or take a train between the two cities?

  3. If I rent a car, am I able to rent in Marseille and drop off in Barcelona?

  4. Any suggestions on places to stop in between along the coast?

At this stage, my schedule is a bit flexible so I could add a few dates and my budget is really secondary to the experience. If something costs a bit more but the experience is worth it then I'll happily pay the cost. Any advice would be appreciated!

FYI - Australia Will Be PIN Only From August 1st (Sort of)

From tomorrow all Australian Issued credit and debit cards will require a PIN.

Overseas issued cards will still work with a signature, however, EFTPOS units will be progressively upgraded so that only a PIN can authorise a transaction.

You shouldn't have any issues for the next year or so but I would advise you (Particularly Americans) to get a PIN for your card if you plan to travel to Australia. (or Europe... or most places in the world)

Have a Ton of Hilton Honors Points. Anyone have experience with Liquidating them?

Basically I have a couple hundred thousand HHonors points, and I don't have a use for them anytime in the near future. Has anyone here had experience with points brokers/other sites that buy them?

Thanks!

College student looking for winter-break travel suggestions.

I am going into my 3rd year at Louisiana State University and was hoping to get some suggestions on interesting places to travel for about a week during December with 3 other friends. I'd really like to do something involving nature and perhaps lodging in a cabin, but I've never planned any vacations myself besides a group trip to Disney World. Can I get some details regarding destinations, things to do, prices, lodging, etc. that could give me a good idea of where I might want to go?

At this point is it safe to go to London, England?

I am going to London either in april or the summer months. I am not concerned about the city of London itself, i am concerned about health. This Ebola disease is starting to scare me. Since London is an international city, im more likely to contract it. In the next months, is it safe to go?

Travelling to Peru, Bolivia and Argentina for a month and a half!

Hi! It's my first post here!

In 13 days I'm going to Peru where I'm starting a trip to Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. I'm leaving from Barcelona on August 13 and my return flight is on October first from Buenos Aires. I haven't booked anything as I'm planing to take things on the way, but of course I have studied a bit where I want to go, make a map with maps engine (which is a fantastic tool), so I can choose where I want to go without feeling lost haha.

Has anyone been there? Any recomanations? For example I have found a better way to go to Machu Pichhu without having to take the tourist pack, much more economic and much more authentic for me.

When I'm coming back I'll be glad to explain how it went and maybe write some tips, and must go places so if anyone is going can take advantatge of this!

PSA: I messed up my travel plans using Skiplagged

I recently booked a ticket through skiplagged and thought I had snagged a great deal. A few weeks later, I realized I had booked the wrong date.

I thought this was my own fault through haste - until I went back and tried to buy another ticket through skiplagged.

Take a look at this screenshot. - you'll notice one date searched for, another date given when actually choosing a flight.

The kayak and hipmunk links on the site went to the correct date.

Who knows if I actually screwed up my dates initially or I got caught up in the middle of a poorly programmed bait and switch? My fault for not triple checking the dates but I no longer consider it a reliable travel tool.

How much money should I save up for a month long NYC/GER/SUI/FRA/BEL trip in September?

I'm leaving September 2nd for NYC for about a week, then I fly to Munich and from there I train it through Switzerland (hoping to hit up Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, and Geneva) and France (Lyon, Paris, Caen) before ending up in Belgium.

I have $3000 saved up right now and expect to have a bit over $4000 by the end of August. Doing hostels/Couchsurfing, already have my Eurorail pass, not planning on staying in Paris, Geneva, or Zurich for that long as I've heard they can be cash suckers.

I've only ever gone on a few short trips to Sweden, Austria, and Germany once before, nothing this long or major so I could use some tips!

Where to go on honeymoon; Phuket, Boracay or Bali?

My wife and I are planning our two week honeymoon right now. We plan on leaving LAX around the 26th of March 2015 and flying direct to Tokyo. We want to make the cherry blossom and spend a week in and around the city. After the hustle and bustle of the worlds largest city we want to spend a week relaxing on a beach. The original plan was to head to Bali but after doing a bit of research we are torn between these three places and would love to hear some insight from people that have traveled to any of them.

We are an active late 20's couple that enjoy exploring, hiking, swimming just as much as we enjoy a good meal, a massage or a nice day lounging on a beautiful beach. What I want is a retreat, a place that will be calm and quiet. Somewhere that is truly exotic and beautiful. Budget for hotel stay and fun is about 4-5k USD.

Previously we've taken a few trips down to Costa Rica (Jaco in particular) where we rented ATVs, surfed, zip lined and then enjoyed the resort beach with a tropical beverage in hand. I think we both enjoy a genuine experience over an overly touristy locale.

Hope this info helps. Thanks for any and all input.

Leaving for SAE August 4th for about a month

I'm planning on solo-traveling through SAE, but I only have $2,500 USD to use, minus airfare. Now, I've backpacked before, but I find it difficult to be frugal. Not because I enjoy luxuries, but because I have a pretty passive personality and you're bound to over-pay the first time you visit an area. I've heard stories of people living off $10/day (or whatever) in some places; granted they've been traveling for years, so they have the experience.

So my question is: Is it possible to travel from Laos->Viet Nam->Cambodia->Thailand->Malaysia->Indonesia->Thailand on just the $2,500 USD??? I have money aside for airfare, so $2,500 is for train/bus travel, food, hostels, and activities.

Traveling from Los Angeles to the United Kingdom

I was just wondering what cheapest airport to fly into was? My final destination is leeds, so far i've found one way tickets from LAX to London for 412, seems like a good deal to me. Thanks in advance for the help!

Thinking of teaching abroad. Advice to find the right agency to go through?

If this is the wrong subreddit, I apologize. Please navigate me to the right one?

I really want to teach abroad while I am young so I can experience traveling, and making it on my own in another country. I don't know the right type of agency to go through or how to prepare. I am thinking of looking at Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia...

Any advice?

Have you ever taken out a loan to do some long term travel? How did that go?

How much? Were you happy with the decision?

Did you have trouble paying it back?

Looking back, was it worth it?

Anyone know a decent bar/restaurant in Zilina, Slovakia?

Short notice I know but, tomorrow 31/7/14, I am visiting Zilina in Slovakia from the UK for a football match. After landing in Bratislava around 10:00 am followed by a 2 hour bus trip to Zilina, I'll have approx 7 hours to kill before the game, no time after the game as I have a midnight flight back. I'm looking for decent bars and a good restaurant. All help greatly appreciated.

How to work out a daily budget for my first solo trip

In November I am going to be taking my first solo trip: Myanmar, Cambodia, the Philippines and Singapore. I'm excited to do this, however I have no experience with how to create a budget.

So far I have just been using google and reading blogs, trip reports and dedicated budgeting guides for each country, and I have the Lonely Planet SE Asia on a budget book on order. Ideally, I want to have an average daily budget that would include all costs and then have another 5 pounds or so on top in case of emergency.

How do you all go about planning a budget for a place you've never been before? This website seems to be rather helpful, does anyone have any experience using it?

Also, I'll glady accept any personal budget recommendations or tips.

Have you ever booked a travel vacation through Groupon? If so, how was it?

A few months ago, my fiance and I booked a 7 day mediterranean cruise and flights (coming from the US) and the whole setup cost us roughly $4,200 for the trip itself (Royal Caribbean International, and the cheapest flights out), not including any sites or attractions at port. We were looking at Groupon last night and couldn't help but notice deals like this one and this. both of these end up totaling roughly $2600 (granted, this doesn't include meals, which are included in the cruise costs).

Our question is for all of you who have used Groupon in the past to book vacations (international gets extra points), how was it, and am I missing anything? How was the lodging?

Thanks!

Traveling by Amtrak?

Anyone here ever travel Amtrak? Going to be doing a NY-Seattle (flying is obviously easier, but cannot) and I've never done any Amtrak travel, so looking for any experiences, or what I can look forward to having or seeing. Possible dos/don'ts, what to bring, stuff like that.

I've heard that it's best to pack on my own food/water, and that they normally will allow 2 check ins and 2 carry ons. What I'm wondering is how spacious the seats are. I was told it's similar to sleeping on a coach flight, but I've also seen trains that have what seems like large tables to sit at.

Before anyone asks, it's cheaper for me in this instance to travel by train, and since I've never done it before, I figured I'd take a shot and experience it.

What are some of the top travel/adventure/feel good films?

I need some beautiful films to escape this boring day of mine!

2nd trip to SE Asia! Help me Reddit!

Hi, this January we trekked across a couple of countries in SE Asia: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Taiwan.

We grabbed that excellent sub $200 airfare special to SE Asia that was doing the rounds a couple of months ago. We still need to book our return ticket.

This time we are landing in HKG(Hong Kong), looking to travel through the following countries(below) and then fly back from BKK(Bangkok). Can you please helps us with our itinerary and must-sees/eat in each place?

Hong Kong -> Phillipines -> Indonesia -> Singapore -> Malaysia -> Thailand.

Would love to make it to Myanmar(would it make sense to travel to Myanmar first from Malaysia and then to BKK) and Laos (since we skipped it on our first trip).

Do you think we can add in a quick stint through Australia/New Zealand or Japan/China?

Looking to travel for four to eight weeks.

Thanks again!

When you meet a cute girl/guy in another country, what contact information do you exchange to possibly meet up later on the trip?

I'm an American male, and I'll be traveling between Spain, France, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and Italy this August, I plan on being social and meeting lots of people, but I won't be able to use my phone, help!!

Looking for fun things to do in Rio de Janeiro

Hey Reddit!

I'm gonna be in Rio de Janeiro with a group of friends at the end of august for a few days. I was wondering if someone who has been there knows of some fun activities to do during the day. We're planning on seeing the Cristo Redentor and Ipanema beach, so maybe something more in the centre. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

How to get from Florence to Cinque Terre?

I'm heading to Italy in a few weeks with my wife and wondering how best to get from Florence to Cinque Terre (leave Florence on Wednesday morning; need to be in Rome by Friday Night). Driving sounds like it would be an intense trip so trying to avoid that, but whenever i try to find train routs via the Google the travel time is >5 hours. Anyone have any good recommendations?

Also any recommended places to go check out are always appreciated!

Thanks!

Looking for a location to go with a friend of mine in the next summer! Only Europe!

Hello travelers! I live in Italy in Florence and with a friend of mine we would like to go foreign in the next summer. The idea is to stay in Europe 'cause the lack of money, and we'd use the coach surfing! We will be both 18, but we don't know where to go. I have exam until July so the idea is to travel in august. Actually we don't know where to go and I hope you could help us using our interests! He likes music (he plays guitar), vintage stuff, car and car race, bike and walk in mountains and park, and electronic stuff.

I like music (I play drums), book, cinema, vintage stuff, informatic stuff(I'm studying IT), videogames, bike and walk trough nice places. We'd like somewhere that match our interests to visit together! Thanks you and sorry for the bad grammar! :D

Going to Namibia, can someone reassure me it is safe there.

This might sound absurd but I am being lucky enough to go with my family on a trip to Namibia next week, but I am extremely anxious about it.

I didn't want to go at first but got guilt tripped with how long my parents had been saving up for us to all be able to go, I am a 20 year old guy if it makes a difference.

We are going to the south of the country and probably not going further north than Okahandja.

I am just worried about visiting Africa at all, we are doing a lot of safari type stuff, walks on sand dudes etc. I am extremely scared of anything that could be there from snakes/spiders/scorpions to malaria to crime. Also we are doing a canoeing to see seals trip, is it safe to go out on the sea near there, sharks/jellyfish etc...

New England Road Trip

Hello! My husband and I (no kids) are planning a New England road trip from Michigan starting August 9th-18th. We are the adventurous sort so we want to try as many things as we can in this small amount of time. We aren't too sure of a budget but we just want to know of the MUST DO things from Michigan to DC to NY and back. We love to eat, drink, be outside and just have a good time. Our last adventure was the great southwest (US) camping adventure and now were looking for some fun on the east coast!

How do I check in online for my flight with Lufthansa that is operated by AirCanada?

Help please! Sorry I've asked so many questions in this sub lately, but this is my first international flight and I'm freaking out a bit. I was really excited to check in online for my flight tomorrow night, and when I tried, I keep getting an error message. I tried both Lufthansa and AirCanada's websites with absolutely zero luck. I'm leaving tomorrow night for London (from Toronto) and I'm completely freaking out. I wanted to check in online and print our boarding passes because it makes me feel better to have them in my hand rather than getting them at the airport (a 3 hour drive). I want to call but they're closed and by the time it's open again, we will already be on our way to Toronto.

This is the message I get when I attempt to check in online at Lufthansa. I got a similar one through Air Canada. I have a confirmation and everything from when I booked the trip 3 months ago and I am able to access my booking and everything, just not check in.

Please help! I am so nervous of doing something wrong!!

Visiting Japan without a JR pass?

Hi everyone! I'm currently in Tokyo. I am spending a total of 2 weeks in Japan at the end of a 3 months long trip in Asia. I was previously in a remote area in Thailand and had no chance of buying my JR pass in advance. I am also on a budget. I am now spending 4 nights in Tokyo. After that, I will probably take a night bus/train to Kyoto and spend a few days there, then hit up Osaka. I would have love to see a smaller, more traditionnal town but I don't know if I can afford it, it has to be on the way/close to where I am. Anyone has any tips or suggestions on things to do and how to get around on the cheap?

Teach abroad

I want to teach English abroad or just teach abroad. I'm certified to teach in IL. Anyone have any personal experiences with going abroad for a year and teaching? I'm trying to figure out where to go... advice?

Best way to turn airline miles into cash? I'm a young consultant trying to get out of student loan debt...

I'll keep this very short. I am a young consultant and I am trying to get out of student loan debt as fast as possible. I have acquired a lot of airline miles. I know that there are underground markets to sell these miles, but that seems too risky and shady.

What would be a better way? Could I use the miles to buy gift cards and then sell those gift cards? or iPads or something?

I could just take vacations for free, but they really wouldn't be free, because I would need to spend money when I land... Any thoughts would be great. And just for transparency I am cross-posting this on several other related sub-reddits.

tour guide for france

I am going to Antony, France with my fiance who is going for a business trip in the middle of September. I am wondering if there is a tour guide that would be able to take me around while my fiance is working during the day for about 2-3 days. I have never been to France so I have no idea what is around.

Guys ima planning on backpacking through Europe for 6 months. I'm a 20 yo male, and have limited experience backpacking. Any advice?

Is it possible to search for flights based on destination city and not origin city?

So my friend was looking for flights to Miami, and he didn't want to search for flights from his origin (Georgia, Europe) but from any other big city in Europe that would have cheap flights to Miami.

We tried everything, but the most we could get was a website that let you search nearby airports and had the option from a distance of 2,000 miles. It was able to show me that flights existed but failed to load them or tell me which airport it was leaving from.

I know you can search by origin and leave the destination blank like on Skyscanner or Kayak or even Google, but the other way round seems impossible. How can one do this without having to type each city manually?

We've already settled on a flight but I would like to know for future use as well because I travel to Europe sometimes and there are plenty of cheap airlines flying to major cities in Europe from where I'm from, but not to the States and sites like Skyscanner don't include those 'cheap' airlines all the time so it'd be nice to have options from a city so I can look up the cheap flights.

Travel insurance question?

Do I need standalone travel insurance?

I ask because the credit card i booked my flight claims to have travel insurance included if I pay for at least 50% of my trip with the credit card. That would be enough right?

What is reddits obsession with the cinque terre?

It seems like there isn't a single day going by on reddit without seeing pictures of the cinque terre pop up. Why are people so obsessed with this place? It's nice, but is it so much nicer than other places that get less attention?

I am genuinely curious about this. Maybe somebody here has a good theory!

I am going to Sorrento Italy on friday for ten days. What must i do?

Backpacking through Central America for first time...advice?

I'll be heading down to Guatemala City with a friend this Thursday. We've got a return date of Aug 25. The only set in stone plan we have is to take spanish classes in Antigua for the first week. We're up for traveling out of Guatemala - to El Salvador, Honduras, etc.

This is our first international backpacking trip. We are budgeting to spend around $30 a day.

I'm looking for any substantive advice - ranging from places to see, things to do, general backpacking tips, etc.

Thanks!

What's been your favorite accidental travel experience?

Reddit, what's been a time where the stars aligned and you got to do something fun or cool that you never planned on?

One of mine happened in Brussels. I was in a beer shop and happened to overhear the store owner talking about his hometown in Iran to another patron. When he was done talking to the guy, I went up to him and introduced myself in Farsi (I'd studied it at university pretty seriously for four years). He was pretty surprised, and we ended up sharing our life stories and just generally shooting the shit for a few hours, while drinking some of his private stock of beers. It lead to me getting my first bottle of Westvleteren XII, which was a bucket list thing for me.

So, reddit, please share some of your serendipitous stories.

Stuck in Madrid. Help please

Basically, me and a friend have interrail passes which are valid from the 1st of August, so we flew out to madrid for a couple of days before our journey began. However, we didn't realise that we would have to get reservations for absolutely every train in spain, and that we'd have to wait 3 days for them to be delivered (At a cost of €17, for a piece of paper which could easily be digital). So now we've got just over 2 days to somehow arrange a train to Barcelona without breaking the bank. Does anyone know what we can do? Can we get a reservation at the train station or beg them to let us on without one? This whole system just seems to defeat the purpose of "jumping on a train and going anywhere", because you have to know multiple days in advance where you're going, and wait for the reservations to arrive. Thanks for reading.

2 guys looking for genuine 3-4week challenging adventure type travel(e.g., with a goal or purpose) ideas, ideally originating from Europe

Awesome travel folks,

Me and my childhood buddy are embarking on our annual trip in 60 days. We ran into our classic problem of not knowing what todo and this time we wanted to turn to your collective experience and wisdom for guidance

In the past we have done things like, 50 states in 50 days(road trip), 9hole Europe(drinking), Central America(surfing) and the like

For this year we looked at the Mongol rally (starts out from the UK and ends in Mongolia) but we missed the starting dates

timing mid September onwards

Length 3 to 4 weeks

Budget 10k in total. Definitely not interested in hotels and the like

Climate We are fairly hardened travellers but would want to avoid monsoon type weather

Interests challenging adventures with an objective or a goal e.g., pan American highway road trip. Anything that could qualify as "epic"

Safety Not too concerned, though getting kidnapped would be less than ideal Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll try to clarify.

Amsterdam vs Prague?

Four 18 year old guys going to either Amsterdam or Prague for our lads holiday next Summer. Which is better? Nightlife? Or things to do? Is one cheaper than the other? Torn between the 2.

How to spend 8 weeks going from Auckland to Los Angeles?

My girlfriend and I will be finishing our 1 year working holiday in New Zealand this October and have saved up money for a trip before returning home for the holidays.

Already been to:We have both to fiji but nowhere else in Asia/Oceania.

Length 6-8 weeks (we leave NZ in October and want to be back in the US by mid December)

Budget We plan to have roughly 2,500 usd each to travel with. Accommodation-wise the priority is peace and quiet at night, no party hostels.

Interests A big decision for us is what we will send home from NZ. We both like to rock climb (mainly single pitch sport climbs thus far) and are considering bringing our gear with us on this trip. It adds a lot of bulk and weight to our luggage though so I think that if we do bring it we would like to spend as little time in transit as possible, even at the expense of seeing less places. The same thinking applies to my paragliding gear! It is essentially an additional large backpack to bring. If we do bring rock or flying gear we would like it to be a big focus of the trip, but they could be sent home to make the traveling easier. Another interest is SCUBA. I am certified, she is not. If there is somewhere with great diving where she could learn/participate that would be great! Our interests are definitely in the outdoors. Countries with hiking, trekking, wildlife, camping, etc are far more interesting to us than big cities and museums. Cultural contact is another priority for us as well. We like WWOOFIng and helpx more than hotels or resorts.

Current ideas/research Bali looks like a promising first stop! We had looked into trying to do a trip to tibet from Bali by taking a train to Lhasa from Shanghai but it would likely be in November and the few tour companies I contacted there said that no trekking would be possible at that time ( I had read you must use an official tour company?) We still considered it because it looked like an exciting train journey but the same companies basically laughed at me when I said I was interested in 2 weeks in tibet for up to 500-600 usd :(. Nepal offered a similar appeal but I'm concerned that it would be frustrating to go in winter conditions and miss out on some hiking, and that the flights would stain the budget. Thailand looks great! Especially the north. I am always up for getting off the beaten path and wonder if Myanmar or Bangladesh would be worth a visit? We are really up for anything north of Australia, east of Nepal, and no further north than Japan.

It feels like there are almost too many options! Let me know if you have any questions.

Traveling form US to Madrid. Aeroflot airlines vs others?

Hi! I'm traveling to Madrid at the end of September for studying abroad and I will be returning in December. I'm looking at flights and comparing prices. Aeroflot seems to be the airline with the cheapest flight I can get, but I'm concerned as to why it would be so much cheaper than others, such as Lufthansa or AirFrance. I've looked up some reviews and they are mixed, of course. Has anyone flown with Aeroflot? Can you give me any extra advice for booking flights? I don't want to book the cheapest flight only to find out there are hidden fees, etc. I've already procrastinated on this and I want to make sure I don't make a poor transportation choice in my haste. Thanks!

10 months of (South) East-Asia with 6000 dollars?

Hey r/travel!

I'm finishing my Bachelor's in November 2014 and starting my Master's in September 2015. In between, I wanna spend as much time as possible travelling East Asia! By the time, I should have saved up about 6000 dollars (5000 Euro's) for pure travelling (so exl. gear, flight tickets, vaccinations etc). I'm a fairly xperienced solo traveller, although I've never done a trip by myself for longer than two months. I'm perfectly fine with couchsurfing, uncomfortable overnight transportation, cheap hostels and street food.

I'm definitely planning on going to India, China, Myanmar, Indonesia and maybe the ''classic'' Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos route.

So my question is, is 6000 dollars a reasonable budget for these plans? I'm thinking of doing some volunteer work via wwoof or workaway in every country. That way I can spend quite some time in one place without spending too much money, yet still have the feeling of being far away from home!

Thanks in advance!

Flying through Beijing, kind of nervous

Hey /r/travel,

I know this gets asked a lot, but here goes. I'm not usually a nervous traveler but I've only done a long haul flight once before. That time was Chicago to Hong Kong, and felt like the longest trip of my life. I couldn't fall asleep, or seem to keep myself occupied, and felt mentally just unsettled. Do you guys have any tips for staying a little more settled on these flights? It'll be a 777 to Beijing, so I know a bit about the aircraft and what to expect there, but it's always so cramped anyway.

Thanks in advance!!

You've got 5 days off work and don't get vacations often. What do you do solo?

I very, very rarely get vacations in my line of work and I just found out last minute that I can take some time off right now. I'm looking to steal some ideas. I live in Southern California. I intend on leaving Wednesday night and coming back Monday. I played with the idea of going to South America for a few days of snowboarding but I've counted that out due to excessive travel time. I'm pretty open to anything, be it flying or driving. I enjoy being outdoors but I enjoy resorts too. I'm ok with spending some money since I have no idea when the next chance I'll have to be out of the office for five days will be. Single male, 31. Any advice?

Planning a trip to Seattle. What is there to do?

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to Seattle for some time in the Spring. I'd be taking my mother and sister there. I'm not entirely sure how long the trip would be, but I'm planning on roughly 4 days, 3 nights.

So far, I have plans of:

Pike Place Market Space Needle Original Starbucks Gum Wall and possibly a hike somewhere nice

Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Was anyone else stuck at London Heathrow on july 28?

I flew in to Heathrow from San Francisco at around 10:15 am but we were not able to leave the plane until 11 because of all of the delayed flights taking up all of the gates. When we finally got off we realized how large what was happening was when we say the insane lines at customs and the giant line of people needing to rebook their flights. I was lucky enough to be able to re book my flight online but i was still stuck there for an extra 8 or 9 hours with my extra flight delay on top of that. Personally i spent this time drinking as much as possible (as an 18 year old its only natural.) Was anyone else there and what were your story of it all? P.S. if you happened to be working anywhere in the airport thanks for being awesome! it most likely wasn't your fault but you still had to take abuse from tons of angry people so thank you very much for putting up with them. Also P.P.S thanks to heathrow security because you are always super nice to me but i always see people yelling at you!

What are some of my best options for a late night arrival?

Hello all!

I have a bit of a dilemma. I am going to be flying in to Milan [MXP] at 10:30pm in a month. Prices for hostels and hotels are jacked up, not to mention most of them are sold out, due to the F1 race.

I plan on heading to Modena the next day at noon.

Options:

1) Staying overnight at a hostel is doable, but complicated due to my late arrival.

2) Staying in the airport til it is a more reasonable time, check my luggage into storage at the train station, and explore til it's time to hop on and head out.

3) Attempt to find a CouchSurfing host, but again, the late arrival may complicate this.

4) ???

Hard Mode: I am a mid-twenties woman travelling alone for this specific period of time.

I have $3,000 USD. Where can I travel to start a new life and not worry about starving after a year?

Hello all,

I'll have $3,000 USD saved up by November, maybe $4,000. I am wanting to move to another part of the world, outside the US, that's safe and where my dollar would go very far. Know of some good options?

Also, I'm willing to work, doing anything that could give me housing or give me a living wage. I'm the former media director of a marketing company, photographer, videographer, writer and overall creative.

I know this is a thing most people won't understand. I hope to hear from the travellers. Thank you.

Travelling Europe, anybody want to rendezvous?

Hi,

I'm a 21 year old, male, English, music graduate. I'm travelling Europe (Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal) from 16th August 2014, to approximately mid-October.

I like music, (playing and watching), football and a bunch of other sports, outdoorsy activities, (hiking/cycling etc.), and I need more ideas as to what to do while I'm away. I would also like to arrange to meet up with like-minded people to do some awesome stuff while i'm away.

Wouldn't it be meet up with somebody, go explore a foreign city, and then do something like a bungee jump or whatever.

Let me know where you'll be and what you fancy doing!!!

Having a hard time picking a hostel in Seattle...

I'm trying to decide between a hostel called The Green Tortoise and City Hostel. The Green Tortoise seems good because of the location, but it seems to be a big hostel, from personal experience that makes it harder to meet people. The problem with city hostel is that it's about a 15 minute walk from Downtown in BellTown, and I hear that whole area can get really sketchy at night. They say BellTown has a lot of bars, pubs and restaurants, but on google street view, it just doesn't look as lively as I would expect it to look; from what people say about the neighborhood. Can anyone one here give me some advice about which hostel might be the best to stay at? Thanks, I appreciate it.

How to get the most out of Caribbean vacation?

Hi All,

Looking to see if anyone has tips for me. I have a 1 week all inclusive resort vacation booked in Punta Cana. I last went 10 years ago and remember being able to go horseback riding at sunset for only $25, there was parasailing for I think $40, a snorkling excursion that was free, and lots of awesome stuff to do that was super cheap.

When I arrive at the resort will those types of affordable excursions be able to be booked? Or am I supposed to do that ahead of time? Online I can only find stuff that is super expensive, like horseback riding for almost $100. :-( Have prices for things gone up that much or is it because I have to wait to be there first?

Dual passport issue: different surnames on passports. What do I put when booking my ticket?

So I have two passports, an Australian (with a USA visa) and an EU passport, but my last name is spelt slightly differently (-ski on Australia vs. the proper -ska on Polish/EU).

I am flying from Boston (where I currently live) to London and then onto Poland. The ideal plan would be to enter London on by EU passport as it would be quicker, but I need to enter the USA on the Australia as it contains my US visa. What name do I put on the ticket?? Australian or Polish?

I should add - I could enter the EU on my Australian passport without needing to formally apply for a visa, but I will be travelling onto Poland from London.

Visiting Russia/Baltics in winter?

Hi, does anyone have experience with visiting Russia and the Baltics in the winter time? I desperately want to go there, but am wondering if winter conditions would detract from the overall experience. I'm not a skier/snowboarder, but I am up for any other wintery activities. Thanks.

Best way to call or text home from Europe to Canada?

I'm leaving Saturday to spend a month in Europe (Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Garmisch, Venice, Florence, Rome, Menton)

Is there a cheap (preferably free) way to call home? I have an Android phone. Are there any apps out there that would help?

Delta airlines - taking a guitar and backpack as carry-on/personal item?

I'm travelling from Switzerland to US with Delta airlines.

I have 3 bags - a guitar in a soft case, a backpack, and normal luggage bag.

I want to have my normal luggage bag as a checked item. I wish to bring my guitar and backpack on board.

Will they allow this? I was going to ask the flight attendant nicely to stow my guitar in a cabinet or something. My backpack's dimensions are 19x15x3inches and only has a laptop and book in it.

Any help would be appreciated!

American going to Sweden for ~2 weeks in late September. Any cool things or places I should catch?

I'm a 28 year old American man that has never been out of the United States. I'm very open minded and intrigued by other cultures.

I'm going to Sweden for two weeks starting on September 25th. I'm going to visit a Swedish friend of mine who lived in America from age 8 until age 28 before moving back to Sweden a couple years ago.

Because I'll be staying with him, I'm avoiding lodging costs and have a budget of $1000-$1500 after airfare is paid.

I'll be flying into Stockholm and spending at least some of the time in my friend's hometown which is an hour or so from Stockholm.

Any fellow redditors ever visit Sweden before and have some ideas of cool things to see or do?

I'm very open to just about anything.

Thanks!

Where to go?

I have began to truly hate America and the ideology of our society. I have never been outside of the country but I know things are very different elsewhere. I'm looking to get a few suggestions where Americans are welcome, low cost of living, and a much simpler lifestyle.

looking for advice on a new place travel-work abroad, preferably in an english speaking country.

Hey reddit! i am an avid traveller, who has spent most of my life roaming. After 4 years of living in rural nowhere to get my BA done however i need stretch my legs a bit, but at the same time make some money (i just got engaged... ha, crazy eh? and awesome). i have worked in new zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Lebanon... an odd jobs in a bunch more, but what with planning my masters and a marriage, i am looking for an easy landing, and to make a little bit more than survival money. i can always research visa's etc, i was just curious if anyone had a great experience in ireland or scotland, or even teaching english overseas, or just any great recent experiences they would like to share to get me up and researching some good places?

[Q] As an europian in Europe for 7 weeks

Hi!

I'm a 30 years old male, from Hungary, never really (just a tiny bit) travelled outside of my county, never flew before. Past couple years, my life is not heading anywere, also i dwelled TOO much time in my confort zone, and it's time to change that.

In 2 weeks i want to start the following journey, alone:

From Budapest Praha (4days) Berlin (4days) Amsterdam (4days) Paris (5days) Madrid (5days) Barcelona (4days) Firenze (4days) Rome (5days) Venezia (3days) Back Home

That's 38days + 9days for traveling. I'm planing to get the Eurail pass for (Germany, France, Spain and Italy). Is it really worth to do Paris -> Madrid by train? It's awful long train ride, same with thing Barcelona -> Firenze. What do you think about this? Also I'm aiming for €60 overall budget for each day.

Tech: I'm not planing to bring a laptop with me, having a compact camera with wifi, and uploading my pictures to Picasa is a reasonable solution? Obv. finding a good wifi network, with proper upload might be challenging.

Here is my main question, how much preparation should i do from each city? I'm not saying that i'm not interested in culture or anything like that, but i know myself pretty well, I'm not looking for every small detail, but i want to get an overall taste from each city/country. To me this would be more about the people (locals and other travelers) then pure sightseeing. So i'm not desperate to see every important sight in each city.

My main goal with this whole thing, is to meet with a bunch of people, and have a small taste from they life, or see where are they heading in life. Honestly i'm looking for inspiration, also i'm hoping that, if i expose myself to different envelopments i might achive that.

Traveling through South America.

Hello! My buddy and I have recently been discussing a 6 month trip through South America. If anyone has any advice on best means of transportation, places to stay, places to see please fill me in. We have each traveled before, but never through South America. Thanks for any help!

Renting a car at Juan Santamaria airport to travel to La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and Jaco [x-post from r/costa_rica

I'm taking a trip down to CR in late November/early December so right on the edge or rainy/dry season from what I've read.

Thinking of renting a car to get around the country rather than rely on shuttles and taxis. I keep seeing that it's important to get a car with 4 wheel drive but was hoping to get advice on how necessary it really is...are people just being overly careful or will I be screwed with a normal car?

Hi guys I'm going to be living in Europe for one year! What things and/or events I HAVE to do while I'm here?

Obviously I know Europe is HUGE and each country has their own attributes. I'm living in Lyon for college and want to experience all that France and the rest of Europe has to offer. I know I want to be at the festival of lights in Lyon in November and Germany for Oktoberfest, but don't know where or when is the best time to go to any other place. I'm open to any suggestions and am pretty versatile (I love to do tours, go to unique nature sites like you'd see on r/EarthPorn, and party at night). Also, I'm a guy so I don't know if that changes anything. Thanks in advance!

Where to vacation in Central America this fall?

We've been to Costa Rica so not there! I'm curious what is safe / beachy / laid back. Not trying to have a super gritty street life thing, more just empty beaches and rum... This is for me and the GF around November likely.

We've both traveled quite a bit. We were thinking South or Central America. Any tips appreciated!

edit: more specific information-

  • coming from NY USA

  • traveling likely late November 2014

  • budget: mid range, flexible

  • interests: relaxation, nature, beach

  • been to Costa Rica, Brazil most places in Europe, Aus, NZ, Asia etc etc.

thanks automod

Traded houses with someone in Belgium, she has our car. Can she leave the keys for us at the San Diego Airport?

And can we likewise leave her keys for her at the airport in Belgium?

What is something I can collect from all the airports I visit?

I will be doing a lot of traveling in the near future and will be spending a lot of time in airports. Is there something that each one will have that I can collect, maybe eventually frame?

Thanks for the suggestions.

25 day American road trip out west, starting in Ohio. Where do think we need to go?

Hey everyone, me and my 2 buddies are taking a road trip in a week lasting 25 days. What are the absolute must see's. We would like to go to as many national parks as possible. Camping hiking you name it. Also any general recommendations such as buying annual passes ect would be very beneficial. The only places we have marked on our map this far are Colorado, Las vagas for a day, and California.

Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio in late November/early December??? [x-post from r/costa_rica]

Only have time to visit one...need some input on which area to do...will MA be rainy this time of year? Heard Guanacaste is much drier.

Flying to the philippines in December and got a few questions

Hello, I am going to try and go to the philippines in December (27th until 31st) In order to visit my girlfriend :)

I've seen that the prices tend to be high (going for 800 euros +), it's from Portugal to Manila ...

I wanted to know if anyone here has had experiences with their airlines, if it's safe to go there.. I know I will be safe once I get to the house but until there what can I look for or be aware of...

Also wanted to know if there are any cheap flight alternatives as I never flew before ....

Thank you

5 Hour layover in Bogota

I like trying out native dishes when i travel and I thought since the airport is within city limits there would be time to at least get a nice dinner between the flights. Or maybe even explore a part of the city? Any recommendations. Thanks

Bus from Thessaloniki to Sofia

My husband and I are going to be in Thessaloniki, Greece in late September and from there, we are heading to Sofia, Bulgaria. I see that there is now train service between the two cities, but I think the bus still looks to be shorter and arrives earlier, which is favourable for us.

We will be in Thessaloniki for four days, so I'm wondering if we should be alright to just buy the bus tickets on the day we arrive there, as they are not available online. We will be taking the KTEL bus.

Thanks.

Going to Vegas - have some questions

Since I'm very unoriginal and shiny lights get me excited, I'll be going to Vegas for my bachelor party this fall. It's my first time going, so I'm not sure what to expect...

Details:

  • We'll be there the weekend of Halloween. Tentatively arriving 10/30(thur), leaving 11/2 (sun)

  • Expecting about 8 people (age 24-27)

  • Interested in staying near the strip, i.e. no site seeing this time

  • While I'd like to keep it affordable when possible, I'm willing to splurge when it may be worth it

Questions:

  • Is it better to find a deal on a hotel right on the strip (if so, where?) or stay some place fun like the Hard Rock because of Rehab?

  • Will the weather late Oct/early Nov be warm enough for an outdoor pool anyway?

  • Are there any packages (hotel, flight, events, bottle service, anything really) that'll cut our costs down in one way or another?

  • What's your opinion on bottle services?

  • Where's your favorite place to Eat? Drink? Gamble? or any other activity?

  • Is 3 nights enough? Should I consider leaving Mon instead of Sun? I heard Rehab is pretty fun on Sundays

  • Any additional tips/tricks/recommendations?

  • Is there another subreddit I'd get good feedback from? /r/vegas seems too local

Things to do and see in Antalya, Turkey

My wife and I (US Citizens) are travelling to Antalya, Turkey over the second week of September.

I'm interested in some must-see sites in and around the area. We will not have a car, but we are staying in one of the all-inclusive hotels in Lara.

Thanks!

Travel advice please, Madrid to Belgrade in 10 days

I've been travelling for nearly 3 months since I first landed in istanbul at the beginning of May and I've found myself in love with a girl who's living in Belgrade for the next month. So naturally I'm going to live with her!

I'm in Madrid with a eurail pass and would love to make maybe 1-2 stops along the way to break it up a little bit. I've travelled well until now and found it easy to make decisions as to where to go but this time I'm stuck and can't make my mind up about anything. Please throw ideas at me reddit! I'm driving myself insane!

The only places I've really seen along the way has been Budapest Barcelona.

Can you apply for a UK student visitor visa in the UK?

I'm an Australian studying in the end of September in the UK and am overseas at the moment. Does anyone know the process and time period of applying for a UK visa in the UK?

Looking for someone who can describe the northern edge of the Darien Gap in Panama- how does the Gap begin?

I'm considering traveling the length of Central America from the Darien Gap of Panama to Mexico and then walking across the border at Tijuana/San Diego, Mexico's northern-most point.

Considerations:

This would be a point-to-point trip with the heaviest consideration given to completing the distance, as opposed to visiting any particular place along the way. Looking to fly to Panama, then do most of the trip by bus, then cross into the US on foot, then fly out of San Diego.

For starters, I'm looking for logistical information on how to arrive at the Darien Gap from the north. Is there literally a road that dead-ends? Or is there simply a town from which travel south is not practical for an outsider? Does the Gap have a noticeable beginning or is it undefined?

I'm 30-ish male from USA. Extensive travel and living experience at home and abroad. Never been to Central America.

Looking to go this winter when the Central American dry season begins. Probably going solo.

Would also appreciate rough maps/itineraries from similar completed trips.

Thanks!

Tips For Split

My gf and I are going to be in Split toward the end of August for 4 days. I have had a look at the wikivoyage page and I have a few questions for anyone who has been:

  • Is Solin/Salona worth a visit? It looks like the ruins arent that impressive from pictures but I can't be sure. - We already plan on having a trip to Hvar.

  • Where does the bus to the airport from Split centre go from? I had a look at the bus website but it's not obvious.

Thanks in advance

I've reached 35K+ with Aeroplan and have questions.

I've reached 35K+ with Aeroplan and they are offering me some options for travel preferences. Anyone have any suggestions on which preferences are better than others?

has anyone seen this competition from roominthemon.com? Is this real?

I came across a website that is offering a 2 week trip to anywhere in the world. They are a startup from London called Roominthemoon.com. I came across 2 articles in different websites. Does anyone know them? Is it real?

Looking for Honeymoon ideas

My wife and I recently got married and are planning on a honeymoon in November. She really wants to go to south-east Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Cambodia etc.) We live in Vancouver Canada.

length Two weeks

Budget around $8000 total, if less then all the better

Likes Beaches, Islands, Turquoise water, Culture, Warm Temperatures, Water Activities (kayak, canoe, snorkel ), tours

Concerns We have heard a lot about Thailand having a civil war of sorts, so that being said we don't want to go to a war torn country.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to clarify.

Going to London, Brussels, Paris, and Dublin. What should we do?

My girlfriend and I are going to be spending about 4-5 days in each city over the next couple weeks. I'm hoping to get some great ideas for what to do at night especially as we are interested in going out a few times. But anything else that we just can't miss is also appreciated.

Tough decision to make, worth it?

I'm at a point in my life where a big change is needed. I'm 30 with six years of Accounting experience but recently started a job almost four months ago for a good company but it's stressful and unfulfilling work. I have the opportunity to leave my job and move to a really small town in Pennsylvania where I have family I can stay with indefinitely and, at the same time, help out my grandparents who are getting older. My grandmother has early stages of Alzheimer's so I'd especially like to spend some time with her as well. I have $20k saved up but I'm having a really hard time coming to terms on such a move. My uncle also knows a ton of people and could get me a well-paying job when want one -- he works in the oil and gas field as an executive so he has major pull in the area.

I wake up everyday wishing I had the nerve to turn in my two weeks notice and make it real but it's very daunting to actually go through with. I don't want to regret not doing this as I've wanted to for a few years now -- take some time for myself to decide where I want life to head instead of go from one job to the next.

I don't take changes that well but I'm certain I could adjust to the slower pace of time and gain clarity for myself.

Thoughts?

Have a free month and looking for a last second adventure

I just had a month long trip to Israel cancelled 7 days before I was supposed to leave. I have a month of time off wok, a healthy budget (8k max), and want to leave the country. I already have flights in place to hit the east coast (Baltimore) on July 30th and return home on Aug 30th. Thinking about getting a last second flight out of the country, anybody have experience doing this? Ways to find good deals on flights if I don't care where I'm going? Probably want to go somewhere English speaking!!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS!

Traveling to eastern Europe this November (Vienna, Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Bratislavia). What do I want to avoid?

My wife and I are doing a multi-city adventure over Thanksgiving. We've done similar trips in the past in western Europe and generally had a fantastic time. This will be our first real exploration in Eastern Europe (save for a Moscow/St. Petersburg excursion in 2011).

I'm using various guide books and websites to determine the things I want to see and do, but I figure a good question to ask this community is the opposite. Don't tell me what you think I should do, tell me what you think I shouldn't do.

What's overhyped and not worth the effort? What's dangerous or shady or a scam? What lessons did you learn?

Driving from Austria to Italy

I will be in Innsbruck in Late April/early May of next year and am considering driving through the Alps to Venice. Has anyone done this or is it worth looking at an alternate route to get to North Italy?

Things to do along the way? (Westcoast US road trip)

A friend and I are going to have a nice roadtrip starting in LA, heading north to San Francisco, turning towards Yosemite N.P., heading through Deathvalley and Vegas, before heading back to San Diego and LA.

Are there any things we must check out while driving this route? We are going in the period of august 16th until september 6th.

We've already established that we'll go for the National Parks along the way, but where wondering if there are some fun stops we should check out.

Perhaps you can help

An elderly client of mine has a trip to Ireland coming up where they will visit Belfast and stay at the Europa Hotel. She called me this morning with "grave" concern that this is the most bombed hotel in the world and that Northern Ireland may not be safe. I know it's quite crazy to think this but what should I say to help calm her?

Is it legal to bring prescription medication for a family friend from Korea to the US?

I have a family friend whose mother suffers from severe back pain and needs some Korean prescription medication (I'm not sure what) immediately. I'm happy to help out but I can't help but feel a bit uneasy.

Yelp-like restaurant/business review website for Europe? Specifically Hungary and Austria?

I'm going to be heading to Austria and Hungary within the next couple of weeks. The problem I'm having is that I'm going to be traveling with my parents and some other older relatives. They're leaning toward joining those "day-tours" that take you to the major destinations.

It's not my preference, as I'd much rather research and explore on our own, but to convince them to not take tours, I need to have a good guidebook, as well as something that'll help show us some good, local places to eat.

I'm on T-Mobile in the USA, which includes international data for free, so I'm hoping to use something like a combination of tripadvisor/wikivoyage/yelp-clone to help me guide them around.

Anybody with a website suggestion?

Should we go to Hawaii or The British Virgin Islands?

My wife and I (from Ohio, USA) are planning a tropical vacation for the first time in several years. We haven't been to either location and are debating between these two. We'd like a good mix of activities/entertainment, wonderful food, and lazy beach time.

Considerations:

  1. We've never been to either.

  2. Money is no object.

  3. We're planning to travel the last week of October.

  4. We will only have 1 week.

  5. Our only tropical experiences have been all-inclusive resorts (once in Mexico and once in D.R.) so we kinda want to avoid that vibe. Lesser known or less touristy spots are a HUGE plus, but we're not opposed to being in a crowd if the experience is worth it.

  6. I've done a fair amount of research on what there is to do, and it seems like there is more in Hawaii...but the BVI seems like it would be less touristy. My fear is that if we go to BVI, we will get bored after a week. We're not super adventurous, but we won't just lay on the beach for 7 days. :P

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Help with International SIM card!

I'm studying abroad this fall in Spain and am looking for a cheap international SIM card to purchase for my time there. I will also be traveling around Europe and it would be ideal for it to work in other countries as well, although my plans aren't definite yet.

I don't plan to use much data, and plan to use wifi for most of my communications back home, however I would like to be able to use data in emergencies especially when I'm traveling and send cheap texts and calls both to the states and around EU.

I've been looking at OneSimCard and their rates look very low for actual phone use and it seems it can be used from nearly every country in Europe which is great, however the $35 cost of the card seems much higher than others.

What do you recommend? Is this a good route to go?

Is it safe to travel in Iran?

A few of my friends and myself have been planning a trip to Iran early next year. I've done a bit of research and most reviews say Iran is incredibly safe for tourists despite how it is generally perceived. But I've heard that the timing is no good now and iran may be caught in wars soon etc. Although some say that's what the media always says, its still a bit unsettling.

Fellow redditors, what are your thoughts?

Dachau and Auschwitz?

Through the course of events I'll be in Munich with about 5-6 days to kill before I fly out again. As I'm already in Munich, Dachau is a definite stop. I was planning to swing up to Berlin via Prague with the remaining days.

Would jutting over to Krakow and auschwitz be worth it?

I am interested in the subject and would like to visit but I'd be squeezing it in and it is the only reason I have to enter Poland. Given that I'll have at least seen Dachau, Is it worth squeezing in?

Barbados vs st thomas

I am planning a honeymoon in October which of these two would some one suggest. We are going with all inclusive hotels.

Costa Rica

Im leaving for Costa Rica in a few days. I am doing a package trip but will have lots of free time. Any suggestions for restaurants or things to do in the evening in the following places would be incredibly appreciated: Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio.

Going to Playa Del Carmen in Mexico, anyone have any suggestions as to what to do/NOT to do?

This is very last minute (typical me), but I'm going on vacation to Playa del Carmen tomorrow with my family and we're staying at a resort for a week. We have a few things planed like going to the beach and taking a day trip to Chichen Iza, but my dad is really into kind of winging things. Is there anything we should do? Anything we should be cautious about?

Also I'm really into trying foreign candy/snacks, so are there any junk foods I should try while there? Thanks guys!

Montreal vs Washington DC

Hi

I am working in America for the summer and have two weeks free at the end of the summer to travel.

I am spending 2 days in Boston, then have a 5 day gap, then 7 nights in new york.

I am thinking of either getting a bus to montreal from boston then going to new york, or spending a little more time in boston and heading to washington dc for a few days.

I am interested in seeing what a place has to offer, nothing in particular, so for example, I know there are many museums in washington, so I would just go here, I don't know a lot about montreal, expect that its primarily french, and I just really want to go to Canada !

Could you guys advise on what you would do?

I guess my main problem is that if I leave America, my visa will be cancelled and I will haave to get an ESTA, which I heard is easy as long as you have proof of a flight leaving the country.

Thanks for the advice guys!

1-Week Trip in September - Where to Go?

Hello - my wife and I have one week off from work in mid-September, and we would like to take a trip then. We just recently moved to the San Francisco Bay area, so we would be open to hearing what your suggestions are for travel from this area. Here are a few considerations:

About Us: We are both in our early 30s, no kids.

Location: We have already been to Portugal - Italy - Costa Rica - Hawaii - Peru - Chile together, so ideally we would like to not go to those places again. We only have a week so ideally we would not travel half-way around the world for this trip. A single long flight is fine though. Ideally we would like this to be an international trip, but trips within the US are fine too.

Length. Probably about a week.

Interests. We are pretty open-minded about where to go. Ideally we would like to go to a low-key city with interesting historical/cultural attractions, or somewhere where hiking and/or beaches are options (but not the only options).

Weather. Again, we are traveling in September, so please keep that in mind. We would like to avoid somewhere where the weather is bad during that time of year, but other than that we don't really have any requirements for the weather.

Thanks in advance for your help - please let me know if I can give you any other details.

How hard is it to get into Tibet?

I have always heard it is hard, and i was just curious as to how hard it is to get in. Also anyone who has gone....How was it?

r/travel, I need your wisdom and experience with US Customs and alcohol duty for my flight tomorrow please!

Apologies in advance if this is a silly question or the wrong forum, I'm in the process of gaining US residency and a bit anxious about doing anything that could cause issues at my re-entry!

I'm a New Zealand citizen living in the US. I am flying from New Zealand to Texas, via Honolulu and LAX, with 2.25 litres and 2.5 litres respectively of mine and my husband's favourite kiwi wine and beers.

This is the first time I have flown to the US via Hawaii and as I have a long layover in Honolulu the airline confirmed this morning my bags will be checked right through to Texas. However, as I'm well over the US Customs duty-free limit I know I will have to declare and pay a few bucks of tax on my alcohol.

I'm slightly confused and concerned about going through Customs in Honolulu with items to declare in my bags that will apparently be checked through to TX. Will they need to see the bottles I am declaring? What if i can't present them because they are in my checked luggage? Or was the airline incorrect when they said my bags would be checked right through?

Has anyone in this sub brought alcohol back to the States that was over the duty free limit, did it cause any issues or delays at Customs for you? I've checked the allowances I can bring into my home state and I am within those, but as a fledgling American is there anything else I should be aware of with regards to alcohol importation?

Cheers!

Heading to the states (and Canada) for the first time, need advice on things I should see.

I will be in DC, NYC and Toronto.

Planning to hitchhike to Morocco - tips and or ideas please

So I'm planning to hitchhike from London through France, Spain and then into Morocco then go traveling through Morocco next summer (June or July). Anyone got any tips for hitchhiking there (I'm a guy) or places to see there and along the way?

Travelling to Hawaii, any tips?

Hi there!

I (22/F) am travelling to Hawaii in early December with my family, from Australia. I am not much of a "beachy" type of girl and am looking for any travel tips/ideas of what I can do there that may fall outside of regular touristy type things. I am fairly independent and don't mind doing things alone. I am generally into music/art/history/culture and don't mind a little bit of casual drinking too ;)

Any sort of info would be appreciated :)

Thank you!

Transatlantic Travel and Customs and checked baggage.

I'm flying to Atlanta from either Glasgow or Edinburgh on the 14th of August and I will be going with a changeover at either London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schipol, Newark New York, or Toronto - atleast they seem to be the most common ones.

I know that going via Newark I will have to retrieve all my baggage and pass customs before rechecking for the domestic flight, but I can't find any information about having to do the same at any of the other airports - I know I won't have to at London as I will not have passed customs yet - but Amsterdam and Toronto are the other options and I'm not sure which to go for.

The main reason being that I will likely have 2 or 3 checked bags and I would like to avoid lugging them around an airport if I don't have to and also I have been told that with that amount of stuff, and with my Student Visa that I am almost guaranteed to be pulled at US Customs and as such I would possibly miss my connecting flight.

TLDR:

Coming from the UK, will I have to collect my baggage to pass customs at a European or Canadian Airport before rechecking them for a flight into the US (all on the same ticket/booking)?

Anyone here has had any experiences with meeting travel partners through websites like travelbuddy or reddit or through the internet in general?

It would be great if there are people here who could share their stories of times when they met up with a complete stranger for the sole purpose of travelling together?

Im planning a trip to Nepal next year and was contemplating this?

Is it safe for a woman to find a partner this way? Any advice on how to pick okay people? Or should i drop the idea already?
