Should we go to Hawaii or The British Virgin Islands?

My wife and I (from Ohio, USA) are planning a tropical vacation for the first time in several years. We haven't been to either location and are debating between these two. We'd like a good mix of activities/entertainment, wonderful food, and lazy beach time.

Considerations:

  1. We've never been to either.

  2. Money is no object.

  3. We're planning to travel the last week of October.

  4. We will only have 1 week.

  5. Our only tropical experiences have been all-inclusive resorts (once in Mexico and once in D.R.) so we kinda want to avoid that vibe. Lesser known or less touristy spots are a HUGE plus, but we're not opposed to being in a crowd if the experience is worth it.

  6. I've done a fair amount of research on what there is to do, and it seems like there is more in Hawaii...but the BVI seems like it would be less touristy. My fear is that if we go to BVI, we will get bored after a week. We're not super adventurous, but we won't just lay on the beach for 7 days. :P

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
