Question about the 3-day visa in China.

I am a U.S. citizen living in Japan. I want to go to Shanghai and Macau next year.

Do I need to get a visa before going to Shanghai (specifically visiting the new Shanghai Disney Park)? Or will Macau count as a "separate country" in terms of the short stay (3-day) visa one can get for Shanghai?

Do I need a Schengen Visa?

I'll be studying in France for a year and will have a student visa. I'm pretty psyched for the opportunity to see other parts of Europe as well. Is there any limit to the amount of traveling outside of France I can do? I'll be in school, so it's not like I'll be travelling constantly, but people on here talk about the Schengen a lot and I've started worrying that I need one. Edit-- US citizen

What are some of the best sites/apps to find out about local events in Europe?

I am traveling with my wife to Europe (Germany, Czech, Hungary, Austria) in mid-to-late June. I just happened to find out about bath parties in Budapest that happen during summer! I was wondering if you can recommend some sites/apps where I can find more about local events and such. Thank you.

Traveling to France in Sept for 10 Days. Paris for 4 days then what?

My wife and I are major foodies and love an off the beaten path adventure. We are staying in Paris for 4 nights in September then we have 4 more nights to spend elsewhere in France before heading back to Paris and flying home. We considered renting a car and driving someplace scenic or hopping from town to town from night to night. Does anyone have any suggestions keeping in mind we love great food?

First time traveling out of the country, advice Please!!!

In December I will be traveling to Europe for 30 days, and I wanted some tips from experienced travelers on have to stretch every dollar I have (my budget is $5000 if that helps), how to make my self look less like a tourist, what things I should avoid doing, how to avoid thieves, how to keep my stuff safe while walking around the city, and anything else that you might think would be helpful would be greatly appreciated!! (countries I will be visiting London, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, and Rome)

International Cell Phone Plans

In a few weeks, I'll be traveling with a group of four internationally. I've looked into Verizon's international plans for texts/minutes and it's just too expensive. We are exploring the idea of using prepaid phones to stay in contact with one another. I was wondering if anyone has any success doing this and which company/plans they recommend.

Need Advice for Europe Trip Next Summer!

Hi all, I am beginning to save money for a backpacking trip to Europe. Ideally, I would like the theme of the trip to be mostly WWII sites and memorials. This including concentration camps, Anne Frank house, Berlin, Normandy, etc. (Other suggestions welcomed) I want to fly into Poland as it seams thats where most of the places to see are, but while in Europe, still try to see Paris, London, Venice and Rome if possible, and Amsterdam. Anyone who has maybe done something similar that could share some knowledge, it would be much appreciated. My limits are probably around 1 month, and about $4,000 so if anyone can help, please do!! Thanks

HELP! I absolutely cannot sleep on planes.

Hi! I've been a longtime lurker of this sub but never posted. I need some advice around the topic of sleeping on planes; I searched but cannot seem to find an old topic that quite covers my issues.

I'm normally a good sleeper but I cannot sleep on planes. It's the last frontier of sleeping whereever that I have to conquer. I hate sleeping sitting up, and the air-rushing noise in the plane doesn't make it any better. I've tried earplugs, eye covers, soothing music, everything and I can't make it work. This fall I'm going on an adventure to central China and, while looking at the plane tickets, by far the cheapest are ones that fly to Asia overnight (I'm in California). I want to book, but flying during the day so I won't be exhausted and stay up for days at a time will simply be prohibitively expensive.

Would love to hear from some others in my position who are now success stories. Should I just drug myself or what? And if so, on what drugs? :p

America trip planning help, please.

Hello /r/travel! I have booked a ticket to America in November for 18 days (the 2nd to the 20th) arriving at LAX from Melbourne. My only problem is I don't know how to organise my itinerary.

I have a friend in Canada who wants to meet in Toronto hello if you're reading this.. but I'm unsure on which way to go. My list of cities I want to see are: LA, New York, Toronto (has to be a weekend, so either 7/8/9th or 14/15/16th), and if possible Vegas (but really only to see the casinos). How many days in each city is really enough? I figured going from/to Toronto-New York by Greyhound would be easiest, especially since a night bus is only $57 or something where I could sleep on (hopefully)..

Any help would be amazing.

Leaving for my first solo trip tomorrow, thanks for all your help and wish me luck!

Thanks to /r/travel and all the users here for helping me put together my first big solo trip. The resources in the sidebar and the info I've gotten from other threads and users has been amazing. I leave tomorrow for a 70 day trip to Europe and I couldn't be more excited. Good luck to anyone else considering doing the same, you can make it happen!

Flight question, am I allowed to depart at my stopover and not complete my trip?

So I'm trying to fly into Houston, TX and out of DFW. There is a return ticket to DFW with the departure flight having a stopover in Houston. Can I get off at Houston and not fly from Houston to DFW?

If so, how do I go about getting my luggage if I'm listed to go to DFW?

Looking to take a 5-day trip in mid-August with my gf. We live in San Diego. Where should we go?

Budget is $800 per person for airfare and hotel. Thinking New Orleans, Austin, or Miami, but open to other cities as well. Any suggestions welcome. We enjoy exploring local cuisine, history, bars, etc.

I'll be in Panama for a little over a month during the rainy season and I've never been to the tropics before. Any words of wisdom from /r/travel?

I'm going to be working in the forest for ~80% of the time so I'm expecting I'll be sodden for the entirety. I'm not camping and will have access to facilities so I think I can manage to avoid trenchfoot. Outside of attempting to stay dry though, I'm a complete newb. Hence, any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! New to posting here so let me know if pertinent info is missing and I'll edit the post. Cheers!

Going inter-railing with friends. Tips, advice and POI are welcome!

Traveling to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Band in Arizona this week. A quick question.

Its my first time going. Do I have to go with a tour? Is it a place I can be there for a few hours? Also I plan on driving to Horseshoe Bend (10 minutes away) Is there a place to park there?

Flying from Seoul, South Korea to Washington State need advice

I'm trying to visit back home for 30 days Juy 16 to august 15. I can fly from the military base for free to Seattle, WA but j have to be on leave and it's not guaranteed that I will get a ticket so I could waste a few days of vacation sitting for a ticket.

Does anyone know of the next cheapest way to fly home? On the ITA app it says the cheapest the find is 1,600 is this my cheapest option?

Working holiday in New Zealand, what jobs to get and how to get them?

Hi, I just applied for a New Zealand working holiday visa and will be going early September and stay there for 8 months.

I was wondering what kinds of jobs are good for 18 year old with pretty much no work experience in any field.

And not having worked much I don't have a proper CV, anyone have any tips writing a NZ CV?

I was also considering doing seasonal work or farm work through sites like helpx.net, workaway.info, wwoof.co.nz or picknz.co.nz. Which is the best one? Would you even recommend doing this?

Do you guys have any other general tips or stuff I should do or see while I'm there?

Going to Portland, OR next week. Looking for interesting things to do and places do go.

I have quite a few places I'd like to go on Hawthorne, which is close to where I will be staying for the week. Also wanted to checkout Downtown. There just seems like there is so much to see and I do not know where to begin.

I'm 21 and can fly nearly anywhere for free on standby. Where should I go?

I am in a very fortunate position in that I can fly to most places for free. I have a friend who works for an airline that flies to six continents, and worst case scenario, I can fly to other destinations on other airlines in the alliance for 10% of the posted fare.

The catch, of course, is that I have to find an open seat and there is a risk that I might not make it on a departure or return flight. But that's happened before and I am well aware of the risks, and plan accordingly.

About me: I'm 21, as mentioned. I'm interning right now and have quite a bit of flexibility in terms of taking time off work. I can probably take two weeks off without any problem. I can't say that I have a preference for English-speaking countries, or any particular type of climate. I'm not the type to hit the clubs every night but I think I would be remiss if I went somewhere without many clubs, bars, etc. I think it might also be important to note that I am gay, and while I don't plan on engaging in any sodomy while abroad, I would probably prefer to avoid countries like Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Where I've been: I went to western Europe last summer and loved it. I spent time in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan, Florence and Rome. I think Paris and Amsterdam were my favorite of the two. Last November I went to Beijing to see a friend, and that was actually pretty fun too. The dynamic was admittedly different, because I had a friend who is studying Chinese and was able to take me places, show me sights, etc.

Idea locations: Over the past couple of weeks I have been narrowing in on South Africa and Australia. Both of them would have a lot to offer in that I've been to neither continent, nor have I been to the southern hemisphere. The only concern I have is how much I can see on a limited budget. In Europe it seemed like I was always only a few hours away from another beautiful city that offered a lot to do. In Australia, for instance, I could fly into Sydney but I don't know what I could do from there. Trying to buy plane tickets to NZ, Melbourne, or anywhere else on short notice would be prohibitively expensive. South Africa would be slightly better because I could take a train to Durban, Cape Town, etc.

TL;DR: I don't have a fraction of the experience that all of you do traveling. I've been to China and western Europe and loved both. I'm not opposed to going back to either but I think I would be better served going somewhere completely new. Please tell me what you would do and where you would go if you were in my position. Thank you!

Traveller letters: Why I object to your objection to kids in business class.

This whole argument seems ludicrous to me. Should I be able to object to a bearded man sitting in business class? Or someone taller than me? The children sitting in business class (or likely their parents) have paid a business class fare for a business class seat, and are therefore as entitled to be there as any other passenger. As for suggesting that a mother could use her first class fare money to buy multiple economy seats, well, you could do the same, buying a cocoon of seats to ensure no other annoying passengers (children or otherwise) are anywhere near you. You say there are no bassinet seats in business class, that is completely untrue, as my family have used these seats on Air France, Etihad and Emirates on numerous occasions. I agree that parents do have a responsibility to look after their children, and ensure they do not annoy other passengers. But i pay for my seats as well, and if you don't like sitting near my children in business class, ask the cabin staff if you can move - we paid for the seats and we have no intention of moving!

American guy travelling to Japan! What are some things I must go knowing?

I would just like some tips on travelling to Japan, specifically Tokyo.

Recommendations wanted:6 1/2 days from Prague to Budapest

I am doing a short trip between these two great cities later this month and wanted to see if any Redditors had recommendations. What places are little known but very interesting? Favorite restaurant/hostel/town? Any tips or tricks you discovered while there? Bus or train to get between cities?

About me: I will be on public transport. I enjoy museums, art, history, a good cemetery or park. Would love to do some hiking or seeing more nature. Cities are fine but I always love getting into the countryside.

I have a rough itinerary in mind: 2 1/2 days in Prague, 1 1/2 days in Brno, 1 1/2 Bratislava, 1 in Budapest (I will be returning to Budapest and so will spend more time there just not this time).

Any one in r/travel a fan of the Canadian TV show "departures."? They are trying to sell off their product inventory and have cut prices and offered free shipping to anywhere in the world.

Here is a link to the store.

Here is a link to their twitter to confirm.

I am not associated with them in any way, I am not getting any karma for this post... I just thought my fellow travelers might want to know this was going on. And if you haven't seen the show, I strongly recommend it. You can find full episodes on youtube but the DVD's have audio commentary where you can hear about the behind the scenes to the travel that you don't really see in the show.

Is there a way to get wifi during an international flight?

I will be flying out of JFK on Wednesday June 18th at 6 p.m. on a KLM flight to Amsterdam and then to Athens. Wifi is only offered on a single Boeing 777 so I don't want to bank on being on that specific airplane. I understand the logistics of not having it (no cell towers in the atlantic) but are there satellite options? I'm willing to pay for a 24 hr access type deal similar to GoGo's deals but I haven't seen any such options. My dilemma at the moment is that there may or may not be a Game 7 NY Rangers Stanley Cup Final game and I might freak out if I can't watch it. Thanks for any help!

What are some things to do and see in Warsaw

I would appreciate any input or suggestions. My flight leaves tomorrow for my solo Eastern Europe trip. I will be flying into Warsaw Poland first. Just wondering what there is to do there!!

Solo travel in Turkey

I am planning on traveling to Turkey in September and was wondering if anyone had any tips on solo travel in Turkey or in general. I'm pretty well traveled but have never done it alone.

Travelling around South East Asia, leaving on the 30th June. Need some advice! (please...)

I posted here a few weeks ago, and got some really helpful responses. So now I'm back for more!

Me and four friends are travelling around SE Asia, starting in Ho Chi Minh and then flying up to Hanoi, before travelling overland through Laos and all the way to Chiang Mai. Then we'll fly down to Southern Thailand, head north from there to Bangkok, and finally head back through Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh City.

My first questions are about visas. We know that we need them for Vietnam (vietnam-visa.com is legit, right?), and we've been told that we can buy them on the border for Laos and Cambodia (is this true?). As for Thailand, is it correct that we get 30 days free because we're all UK citizens? Because that'd cover us nicely. Also, does a "30 day multi-entry visa" mean we can enter a country as many times as we want within 30 days of getting the visa, or does it mean we can be inside the country for 30 days over any period of time (20 days within two months, for instance...)

Another thing I wanted to know was what sort of clothes to bring at this kind of year. Footwear? Long sleeve? Coat? Shorts? I have no idea...

And finally, money. What's the best way to carry it? I have experience with the Post Office Travel Money Card, but I'm not sure whether or not it works in Asia. Are there plenty of ATMs about?

Thanks for the help :)

Do you have any ideas for making things out of old ticket stubs from travels?

I have a lot of old train, subway, hotel cards, etc from my travels. I have been saving them and hoping I could find a way to make something cool out of them but I don't want to do a collage or simply display. Do you have any ideas or know of anything I could do to make something out of them?

While backpacking Europe, should I take one set of "nicer" clothes for clubs and more upscale restaurants?

Guy here.

Based on a previous experience I had in Asia, I'm a little worried about the clothes I'm taking to Europe. Most are normal everyday clothes, but I doubt they are nice enough for clubs.

Can anyone offer some input on how I should dress for a club in Europe and recommend any particular clothing or looks? Lightweight, cost friendly and wrinkle free seems like a good combo.

Thanks!

What is the cheapest way to travel to and stay in the South of France?

This summer, two of my friends and I are planning to travel to the South of France for two weeks or so this summer. We're all writers and so this whole trip is really in aid of our writing. When we are there, we plan to do quite a lot of walking and observing the countryside. We would all like to do the romanticised vagrant traveller thing, where we sleep under the stars and pick fruit from the trees, but we're also very aware of how unrealistic this is.

We're based in the West Midlands (UK). The cheapest tickets we've found are about £85 non-flexible return with Eurostar to Paris and then a bus the rest of the way, but we're open to much more creative (and hopefully inexpensive) ways.

Thanks in advance (:

Hey reddit, does anyone on here works for an airline?

Hey reddit, I'm in need of a buddy pass for the month of August or September. If anyone has one they can spare it would be deeply appreciated.

Help for shoestringing Istanbul, Budapest, and London (xpost from r/shoestring)

My SO and I will be embarking on our RTW trip in 6 weeks and was wondering if any of you frugal fellows had any tips for these 3 cities. I think it's just the fact that it'll be my first time traveling through Europe at I'n worried about how expensive everything will be. I currently live in Korea and have traveled all around Asia so I guess I'm just used to Asian prices. We've already booked our accommodations at cheap but well-reviewed hostels and 1 bnb apartment so we have that taken care of. I was planning on opening a charles scwhab checking account to save money on the atm fees but the process got messed up since I'm not in the usa right now. Is it possible to use my American capitalone credity card in those 3 cities? I read most European cities use pin type credit cards. We also plan to cook as much as possible and take advanage of any free entertainment that we stumble upon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

11 weeks in Tajikistan. Any advice or recommendations?

I'm an American law student who will be living and working in Dushanbe, Tajikistan from June to late August. Anyone been and have any advice or recommendations? I've read the Robert Middleton book "Tajikistan and the High Pamirs" and done some other research but am curious to see what folks have to say. I hope to travel around the country and perhaps visit other countries in Central Asia as well. Thanks!

Need help finding cheap hostels in Europe

Hi everyone!

Me and one of my best friends are traveling to Europe on June 15th and will be going to Barcelona, Venice, Paris, London, and Dublin. We will hopefully have friends to crash with in Barcelona and London but were thinking we would use hostels in the other cities. Neither of us have ever traveling outside of the United States before.

I've been doing research on hostels but all of the prices I'm finding seem to be on the expensive end (I'm talking about 60/70 a night) which seems odd since most friends I've talked to said it's more like 25 or so a night. Am I doing something wrong? The friend I am traveling with is on a tight budget so we're trying to stay places as cheaply as possible. Is it cheaper if we try to find them there? Are there even any hostels in Venice (I've only found information on one in the city).

Thanks!

I need help with a slightly unconventional Germany/Switzerland itinerary

Im flying to Frankfurt and then to Lucerne to visit family.

I have two weeks in Germany/Switzerland before flying to Paris.

Other than those two cities my itinerary is open. I know Frankfurt isn't the best tourist city so id like to explore the surrounding area.

So what are the best places to see in that area?

I (obviously) have free lodging in both cities.

I need a cheap, safe, clean hotel, motel or hostel to recommend to a visitor from NYC

I'm not sure when they can come yet because money (flying from the West Coast) is a serious problem. I wish I could give them a place to crash, but I am living with family. What I'd like to do is help them find someplace safe in Manhattan (or across the river in downtown Brooklyn) that is safe, bedbug-free, subway accessible, and where they won't have to share a toilet.

On hostels.com I can't even tell how to find places with private bathrooms (as opposed to rooms with no toilet facility within--just rooms with showers and sinks). I would like to find a deal for $175 and under per night, three nights, possibly in fall or winter (worst seasons, I know.)

I see a lot of hostels with shared bathrooms.

Is there such a thing as a hostel that offers private toilet accommodations? When should I get them to come--summer? Late Fall? Before Christmas?

Traveling to England in a few months, what shall we see?

My parents and I are thinking of doing a short trip to England in a few months, and I'm wondering what we should go see.

My mother took me to Europe when I was a child, but that was quite some time ago, so most things will be new for us (plus my father is going to celebrate his retirement).

When we were last in London, we visited Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury Cathedral, Hyde Park and took a boat trip down the Thames. We would love to see other things, including outside of London, but we're unsure what we should hit. My father and I are big fans of Formula 1 and would love see something racing-related (he's always wanted to see old British race cars and circuits), but otherwise we're pretty open to whatever. We all like history and British culture, as well.

Any suggestions would be helpful! Thank you!

Flying Tel Aviv > Prague > Oslo > Chicago. Could anyone recommend a travel agency please?

Hello, kind people.

I'm a 24 year old Norwegian guy, living in Oslo. This august I'm gonna be travelling with a friend of mine from Chicago who just hosted me over there. We're pretty close and she helped me out with some of the expenses. Now I want to return the favor, and am currently looking at options to find the most affordable one. Here in Norway, travel agencies seem to be working differently than in the US. They get different prices for one-way flights and therefore, travels such as this one (Tel Aviv to Prague to Oslo to Chicago) becomes much cheaper than ordering the tickets as a private person.

Now, my friend is trying to order tickets, but would prefer to do so through an american company. Does anyone know of a company that fits my earlier description that she can call?

Any help would be much appreciated. Sorry if this is a stupid question, googling yielded no results! :(

Thanks in advance

Please help develop our free travel resource. Are we missing any important documents on our list?

Hi everyone. Together with a few other travellers, I'm developing a travel inspiration and information website. Our goal is to make travel more accessible and less intimidating. Part of that is providing basic (but surprisingly hard to find in one place) resources. Please help us make travel easier for others by critiquing our Documentation resource. Thank you!

Has anyone traveled to South East Asia during summer months? Is the temperature unbearable?

Hi Reddit!

Is it worth traveling to south east asia in the summer months?

How to find out what days of the week are popular in Vietnam

Starting to backpack through Vietnam and the rest of SE Asia. Is there a way to find out what cities have big nights on what days of the week? Is it like America where Friday and Saturday are big? Does it not matter? Does it vary by country/city?

To SIM card or not to SIM card?

I'll be volunteering in Ireland for the month of August and traveling around the country on days off, using couch surfing when possible. I was debating if I should get a SIM card for my iPhone to keep in contact with my volunteer location, couch surfing hosts, and any potential friends I make a long the way. I am aware of apps like Viber and Whatsapp that can help with keeping in contact with people back home, but would they be useful for contacting people who live in Ireland?

Galicia or Asturias?

I'll be traveling through Spain for about a month. I have 4 or 5 days unaccounted for and am trying to decide between Asturias and Galicia. Does anyone have any preferences?

Thanks!

Another Contiki post -- Superior vs Budget? [I have already checked all the old posts]

Hello everyone. So, I'm planning to go on a Contiki Europe trip this summer, and need some advice. After looking through the reddit and google searches, I was not able to come up with any good information concerning my question.

I'm a 22 year-old male solo traveler who likes nightlife. I would like to go out a decent number of times on my trip. My main question is whether the demographics of the Superior and Budget trips are different to the point of there being different nightlife experiences.

From what I've read, the Superior trips may have older people (who may not be as interested in going out in the evenings). However, the Budget trips have accommodations so far outside of city limits to the point of not being able to travel into the city to visit bars / clubs.

Any advice/anecdotes would be extremely helpful in making my decision. Thanks in advance!

Backpacking in Europe for three weeks. How much cash should I bring with me?

I'm American and my bank doesn't offer the European card with the chip in it. I do however have credit and debit cards that are Mastercard and Visa which I know are used in Europe. I'll be traveling in England, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. How much cash should I pull and bring with me? All of it? Or should I bring half and then withdraw the rest of it as needed? What would you recommend? Thank you.

What are some great things to do in Barcelona.

Hostel Help: Twin Private Vs Double Private

I'm booking some hostels for my brother and I and I am incredibly confused about the rooms. The single private room is self explanatory. I want to confirm the difference between a Twin private and a Double private.

I swear last year I booked a Twin Private and I ended up with...a single 'Twin Bed'.

Need help scheduling a Japan trip for me and my partner

First off, I want to mention that I have no experience in travel planning and frankly I always feel very intimidated in buying airline tickets. I tried asking a travel agent company but they were very vague in response and didn't ease my anxieties. Oh well. So here I am, trying to figure this all out.

Where: Japan, want to see Tokyo and Kyoto

Dates of travel: This is flexible. My main question about this is, what time of year is it cheapest to fly to Japan? I wouldn't mind visiting in the winter months if it saves me a very significant amount on airfare. If I had my pick of the year I would like to go in October.

Budget: Ideally I want to spend less than $2500 all inclusive on airfare for the both of us. The cheaper that is, the more we will be able to spend for fun in Japan. I want to stay just under 2 weeks. I think we will have around $4000ish to spend on everything including tickets.

Interests: I want to check out cool shopping in the city for part of the trip, and also spend a couple days in nature visiting cool temples and onsen. But, I have heard that some onsen don't allow visitors with tattoos? Both me and my partner have tattoos but not a ton of them, only one or two each. We also want to see cool historical stuff too, and we are very interested in Japanese cuisine. I also speak a bit of Japanese, definitely not fluent though and sometimes have a hard time with certain accents.

Places we've been: I haven't been out of the country much (a trip to Amsterdam and England) but my partner is much more well traveled.

Ideally if there is some kind of package travel deal I can purchase I think that would perhaps be best, then I can see what everything is exactly going to cost ahead of time and take out the unknown factors. I haven't had much luck with searching for one because I don't know if it's a good deal or not - it's hard to sort through the listings when one doesn't have much traveling experience.

Thanks in advance for anyone who is willing to help!

Need advice from someone experienced with world travel

I've been going back and forth for over a month. Have done a ton of research, but I think I am overwhelmed and I would like some advice from someone with lots of life and travel experience.

My situation: I am unskilled/unemployed (I do have a certain type of engineering degree, but I want to be an entrepreneur, not related to that field, so I say unskilled). I am 32. I have 1.2 million dollars in reserves from working for 11 years (also worked internships during college, and went to college on a big academic scholarship so most was payed for).

I can fly for free (standby) anywhere that american airlines can fly (I am based in DFW).

I am torn because most of all, I want to be an entrepreneur of some sort, and so I don't get excited about travel because I feel like I should be figuring out how to start a business and make money, since I am unemployed (I quit my job, I was not fired, I was actually highly esteemed and promoted within my company, it just wasn't what I wanted to do).

I am wondering about maybe flying into Zurich or Madrid or London (they have a nonstop from dfw), but it seems like traveling around Europe can get pretty expensive. I know places like Milan and Amsterdam are fun to see, but I don't even know how much fun I am going to have because I'm going to be worried about what I am doing with my life the whole time.

Maybe I should forget about making a living for a couple months and just go travel and enjoy myself.

I am wondering if maybe part of my drive has to do with my parent's expectations of me, and maybe that is not my expectation, and I need to find that out. Maybe travel will help me get away from their reach, and help me figure things out on my own. I am not sure.

I feel so god damn confused right now, I have no one sane to talk to. I don't know what to do for my next step, I don't know what is happening with my life. I feel so overwhelmed, I am shaking while I am writing this.

Which should be ridiculous because hey, I've got over a million dollars and I am only 32, I should feel good, right? But I am scared that if I don't figure out a way to make more money that I'm just going to burn through this money, and then I will have to go back to my job, and quite honestly, I'm pretty sure I would rather be homeless. And that's not a situation I would want to be in either.

Someone help me, please.

Prague and Milan/Venice/Rome/Florence

Will be there in late November with the Priceline deal. This is my first time to both areas and while we have pored through travel tips online, I would love your input!

Generally, when I travel, I'll hit all the "must-see tourist" destinations, but also love hearing from locals about things under the radar. Also, I know that some areas are super overrated, and I'm trying to make the most of my 4 days in Prague and 4 in Italy.

Would also be interested in a meetup if there is enough interest!

Any advice on booking hotels during peak summer months?

I'm looking to book a nice hotel during the month of July, but all hotels online say they're booked the whole month. Any advice? Does calling help with chances? Are there waitlist type things for hotels?

Advice for a trip to Japan

I start my full-time career in August so before that, I want to do a solo-dolo trip to Japan. Whenever I meet Japanese people here in New York, they're always really impressionable and I've always been fascinated by their culture. Plus doing this by myself seems like a really great experience.

I'd like to go for anywhere between 10-14 days. I'm also looking to spend anywhere between 3,000-4,000 USD. Can anyone who has gone before give me any advice on planning this? What cities should I check out aside from Tokyo? Would I just get one hotel and hop around city to city? Would their train system work well for that? And if I did stay in one city, what city should I look to stay in that would be reasonably priced?

I'd really appreciate all the info and would love to hear some stories as well! Thanks.

How long would it take to see the major cities of Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia?

Four days in Rome. What I cannot absolutely miss?

Hi r/travel! This will be my first self-paid vacation. I'm specifically looking for tips on monuments, places, restaurants (cheap and local, no tourist-traps), events, etc. Hotel's already booked for the beginning of July (10 walking minutes from the Coliseum) ticket planes already bought too.

This will be a 7year late honeymoon, so romantic suggestions are also welcome :) Budget is tight, but it'll do. Thank you!

1st trip to South East Asia need little help though.

Okay so me and my girlfriend have decided we will be taking a SEA trip sometime in December for at least 2-3 weeks. We bought our plane tickets yet as for we are trying to get the best deal possible but we did recently get our passports. So i guess the questions are: 1. Is it cheaper to fly round trip or one way there and back? 2. Lets say we start off our trip in Bangkok where should we go next 3. Overall how much would be good enough money to put aside for activities. 4. How long should we stay in these suggested places?

We would like to try and get the best experience possible so we plan on doing the whole elephant rides, tiger zoo, beaches , checking out the temples and all that other jazz. But if there's anything else we should check out please let me know Thank you all I appreciate it

Planning a trip to Morocco and looking for any and all advice you can give.

I've always wanted to go and now that I just graduated college I have started to research it more seriously. I am a huge history buff, I've only traveled abroad once when I studied in Paris for a month. I loved Paris but I was disappointed to not experience culture shock, I have really wanted to travel to places different than my own culture as a learning experience and so forth. So far my plan is to leave next spring, but that can be pushed back if needed it's pretty open ended at this point, and spend two weeks there. Originally I was going to spend all of that time in Tangier but reading through past posts here I would like to divide up my time between different cities and regions of the country. Basically, I'm looking for advice from people who have traveled there or live there and can give me advice on which cities to visit, what I should expect to spend for the whole trip (not counting the airfare) I have time to save up so my budget is open, and any tips concerning my actions in public, how I should dress (I'm a 23 year old female who will be traveling with her 23 year old significant other) and so forth. Mostly, I'm looking for advice on areas/cities to visit and idea of a budget. I don't know of a lot of places to visit other than the very touristy cities and I don't want to feel that I've missed something due to lack of knowledge.

What should a first time traveler think about doing in the months before leaving?

Hello. I am supposed to be leaving to study for a year in Nagasaki, Japan. I received a full tuition scholarship but need to pay for room and board out of my own pocket so I've been saving for a while. Basically the specific things I was wanting to know, as I've never traveled out of the country before is: What are any tips on buying a plane ticket? What certain things should I bring with and what sort of supplies should I think about purchasing when i'm over there? Any other tips would be helpful!

Where should I travel for a week this summer in the US?

My SO and I are looking to take a week or so to travel this summer somewhere (anywhere) in the US. We're hoping to find a beautiful place to camp close to good swimming (river, lake, etc). We live in Oregon currently, but are willing to drive for up to 10 hrs or take a plane. We've been thinking about going to Glacier, but want to be somewhere that isn't too crowded during the peak months. So we're guessing most National Parks are out of the picture. Any suggestions? Specifics would be great.

Edit: Also, we're pretty low-budget. We don't want to spend more than $300 round trip on airfare and would like to camp or stay at hostels for the week.

Advice Needed on Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro Travel!

I am am very excited to be heading to Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro next week! I will be there for 9.5 days, and need an itinerary critique to make sure I do not miss anything. I am flying into Dubrovnik and flying out of Zadar so I would need to end my trip there. Here are some destinations I would like to see, but I am not sure how long we should stay in each place. Any recommendations on places to visit or where to stay longer/shorter would be very helpful and appreciated!

Itinerary: - Dubrovnik (2 nights) - Kotor (day trip) - Mostar (day trip) - Korcula (1 day?) - Hvar (2 days) - Brac (worth a visit?) - Split, Trogir, Makarska (1 day?) - not sure if it is worth staying in split for the day or visit these 2 other villages - Plitvice Lakes (1 day) - Zadar - not sure if we should stay here for a few days and visit Pag, or if we should visit the villages of Istria

Advice on North India

Hey all. I'm planning a trip to India from Mid July to Mid September with a 3 week placement in the middle. The placement starts in Delhi so does anyone have any recommendations on where to go in North India from Mid July to Mid September? How long would I need in each spot?

Also, I'm probably going to go to Kochi and Bangalore afterwards, will they be okay to visit from Early September onwards? Would you recommend anywhere else in South India which would be better?

Thanks for any and all advice!

Question about the New Zealand Working Holiday visa and age.

Can you apply for the NZ working holiday visa at age 30 or do you need to be younger than 30? My girlfriend is 30 now and we've considered trying to go to NZ to work/travel. I've been, but she hasn't. It may be a bit harder for her because of her nationality, but I guess that's a moot point if the age limit is before your 30th birthday and not your 31st! Thanks!

Contiki Alternative?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there are any alternatives to Contiki when it comes to European tours for twenty-somethings. I did one of theirs tours years ago, and had a good time. This time around, I'm looking for a something a little more low-key. Suggestions? Thanks!

Three weeks to kill between Siem Reap, Cambodia and Bangkok - suggestions?

As the title says, my wife and I have found ourselves with three weeks to kill in SE Asia. After visiting the Angkor park we're not really interested in any more temples, and we don't have the motorbikes or experience to do any long distance riding with our large backpacks. Don't mind doing day trips on hired scooters though.

I'm hoping someone here has some suggestions - we wanted to go to the Cardamom mountains, but I can't find any way to do it without having our own bikes or backtracking all the way to Phnom Penh, which we also don't really want to do.

We promise to post pictures of wherever you suggest!

Looking for travel backpack recommendations for a month-long backpacking trip through Western Europe

I am traveling with one friend, leaving in June and returning in July. We are visiting Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Denmark. This will be my first extended backpacking trip

I am 6' 1", and my torso seems to be around 18.5 inches (based on attempts at measuring myself, I'm going to have a friend measure me later). I weight 180 lbs.

I would like a pack that fits as a carry-on, which for our airline is 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.65 x 15.75 x 9.06 in)

My budget limit is around $200; I could be convinced to go higher if it was really worth it, however.

I have checked out the Osprey Farpoint 40 and the North Face Overhaul 40; both seem to be solid but have their issues. I was wondering if anyone could recommend other bags I should check out, or had insight into the packs I've been looking at. Thanks!

Best way to map out an itinerary?

I have a list of about 10 upcoming destinations. I want a simple way to just put all of these points on a map and show some semblance of order between all of them. What's the best way to do this? Any good online tools? I've been trying with Google Maps for a while but can't get it to work for me which is just ridiculous!

I'm 28 Today, and Does Anyone Want to Help Me as I Travel Cross-Country this Summer?

Today is my birthday, and as I sit here in Montana, staring at my ceiling, watching it shimmy in the subtlest way (suppose I should have had sleep instead of caffeine), I realize that this summer is my last shot to figure out this crazy blue ball.

So! Here's the deal: I am in a wheelchair; I have a Master's in School Counseling (BS in Psychology); I'm going to pull out $5k and for the next three months, I'm going to travel across the country and finally meet everyone I need to meet to put it together. There will be singing, there will be writing, there will be drawing, there will be talking -- seriously.

Now this is really just a feeler, and perhaps this isn't even the right subreddit to ask, but is there anyone interested in showing me their piece of the world, and letting me crash on their couch for a day or two along the way? If you're worried about me murdering you in your sleep, I'm 4'3'', so it would be the most adorable homicide. And if you get it on film, you'll be guaranteed viral star status.

Just how feasible is this?

need help planning trip to Bali

hi guys, not sure if this is the place to be posting questions like this but I'm feeling very overwhelmed as I have never planned a trip on this scale. my girlfriend and I would like to spend 2-3 weeks in Bali. the first week is pretty well covered because we are looking to volunteer through lvhq. but the rest of the time is unaccounted for. we would like to see as much as we can of Bali. so does anyone have any suggestions as to places we need to see or stay at or eat at? a route we must take or places to hike? also I am an American, what is the process like for acquiring a visa? how long does it take? cost? I know that was a lot but anything someone could offer would be much appreciated. thanks!

Are there any sites to get discount airplane tickets?

I have a wedding that I need to attend on the other side if the coast and I don't have much money. Where is the best place to get airline tickets?

Anyone here worked as a hostel receptionist?

I'm not exactly where to post this since it would probably be burried in Askreddit and the Casualaskreddit is pretty dead. Feel free to remove it though.

Anyway, I was recently offered a job as a hostel receptionist in Queens. I've never worked in that area before and I'm curious about how challenging it is. I've stayed at numerous hostels abroad and had mostly good experiences with the front desk, but I'm assuming the work they do can be daunting.

Has anyone had experience in the field? Was it worth the pay? Did you like it? Keep in mind I'm talking about a hostel not a hotel. The place holds about 130 people.

2014. május 29., csütörtök

Traveling to Istanbul in June and my trip coincides with the Istanbul International Music Festival.

I will be in Istanbul for 1 week in June with my family. What are some cool spots in the city for live music?

Also, any recommendations for music shops? I would like to purchase a Saz/Bağlama

Dear r/Travel - anyone have any tips for booking an All-Inclusive trip with a large group of people?? We are talking about 10-18 people...

Any recommended places to visit on the that route would be greatly appreciated as well as any travel tips from experienced traveler's. We are on the trip for 12 days starting this saturday. Thank you.

Dear r/travel My Wife and are taking our honeymoon to Italy, We're hoping for 10 days. Goal travel dates Goal travel dates would be September 16th- October 5th. Need help please see post for more details.

Some background info: My wife and I were just married May 11th, 2014. When we first met we both said our dream was to do our honeymoon in Italy. We both just graduated from advanced degrees and she is studying for her bar exam this summer while I work. Which is why we have set the honeymoon date for Mid to late September. I have been looking for months for deals, tours, cruises, group trips. The best flights I have found are around $1,300 with massive layovers. I need help finding cheap flights the goal is round trip under $1,000 a person. Our goal lodging cost is $100 a day. We want to be able to do all travel and lodging for $3,000 or under.

Next we want to see and experience all that Italy has to offer with some of the main attractions of course. So really, I am reaching out for some expertise and guidance on traveling to Italy, where to stay, where to eat, and not fall into tourist traps.

Starting point Tampa or Orlando Florida.

Goal is Ten days, I have a full 10 vacations days to use but my hope is to not have to use all of them. So ideally 4 of the days would be weekend days and the other 6 week days.

As to itinerary the must haves are Rome, Florence, Venice. A few Vineyards. Possible extended things, day trip to Paris or to Niece.

Goal budget for 10 days with no food, would be $2000 for flights (preferably under $2000 for the both of us), and $1000-$1500 for housing. We’re trying to keep that budget tight, tight, tight so we can enjoy the rest of our trip.

Goal travel dates would be September 16th- October 5th.

Thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate any guidance and help you can give. If anyone wants to help and wants more clarifications please comment and I will respond as soon as humanly possible.

Are Air miles credit cards worth it?

My wife and I are thinking of taking a big trip every other summer using the bonuses she gets at her job. A friend of mine told me I should get an air miles credit card, put everything on it, and pay it off with our normal bank account. 1) Do the travelers on here recommend doing this? 2) If so, which cards give you the most bang for your buck? please. Thanks.

Seeking advice on Indonesia for 3 weeks in June

I have somewhat unexpected vacation time coming up very, very soon. I essentially have all of June off, until the 24th.

I'm an experienced solo traveler, female in her late 20s, flying from the west coast of the US.

I am thinking of going to Indonesia for this vacation, as the weather is supposed to be about as good as it gets there in June (it is said to be drier this time of year and the humidity not quite as ruthless...though coming from the Pacific Northwest, I'm sure I'll still melt). Not to mention I've found a ticket price that is reasonable for such a last-minute trip (about $1,100USD)!

This is by far the least amount of time I've had to plan a trip. I'd love some advice from those of you who have been. I always get the best advice from r/travel and once again I seek your wisdom.

  1. Obviously, Indonesia has a lot of beaches. This is not what primarily attracts me to Indonesia, though I'm interested in a few days on the coast. However - I'm not a fan of "beachy towns" overrun with tourists. In the last few years I've been to a few places that other people really recommended - Caye Caulker in Belize and Morro de Sao Paolo in Brazil - and found them quite uninteresting and too kitschy for my taste (though I can see how 10 years ago they would've been truly amazing!). As much as possible I'd like to avoid those types of places. If you can recommend an island or coastal community that is laid back but more authentic, I'd love your recommendations!

  2. Traveler to traveler, how is Bali? Is it a must or something to pass as it has become very popular? For a long time, I have had a dream of biking around the island, through green paddy fields and beautiful landscapes. If not Bali, where can I spend a few days biking and exploring an island?

  3. I'm a mountains, rainforest, breathtaking vistas kind of girl. I love small towns and lots of interaction with locals. I'm looking for some inspiration and some quiet. What would you recommend for that?

  4. If anyone has experience renting a motorcycle, what was your experience like? Would you recommend it, as someone who has never ridden solo on one before?

5 Any experiences you enjoyed I would really appreciate! I will also search for general recommendations in the r/travel history.

Thank you kindly!

p.s. Despite how it sounds, I don't hate people! I am coming off of a stressful period of life and would like some beautiful places to relax, adventure around and collect myself.

p.p.s. I posted a few weeks ago seeking advice on Mongolia or Kyrgyzstan. Thanks everyone who responded! Unfortunately, the ticket prices are all $2000+ for June so I've had to rule it on for that reason. I definitely plan to go to Central Asia next summer, and hopefully for a good amount of time.

Cheap and fast way to get from Bruges [Be] to Amsterdam [NL]

Hey reddit!

I'm trying to plan a way to get from Bruges to Amsterdam the cheapest way possible circa June 18th but all I can find are pricy train tickets (50 to 100 euros).

I'll be alone with my backpack, 23 y.o. male. Any advice as to finding a car rental or meeting people? Or maybe even a ferry?

Destinations close to Eurail station stops?

My boyfriend and I are traveling to Europe next Summer, as I have previously posted, and I think we have decided what countries we are visiting in our month visit: denmark, holland, belgium, france, germany, switzerland

Anyways, we will be traveling via Eurail and will not be renting a car. I want to know if this is plausible at all. What cities are within walking/biking distance from these stops? I also assume there is public transportation in these places. How much is the public transportation typically? Anything will be helpful!

I have a 12 hr layover in JFK. Is it worth the 50$ to purchase the Admirals Club Lounge Pass?

I have a 12 Hr layover in JFK. I am arriving from Rio so the flight will be at least 10 hrs. I want to know if any other travelers have had an extensive layover in JFK and if $50 is worth access to showers, WiFi, coffee, snacks, etc. I am pretty short on money, so this would be the only thing I would do there, thanks!

What do you do from landing to actually arriving to your final destination?

Hi, I am validating an idea, so no hints now.

Please tell me what you do after landing, like strech your legs, check you mails, search for WiFi, luggage, restroom, food, drink, baggage claim, transportation..., how long they take etc.

Thank you!

East coast! First US trip! 8 days starting/ending in Boston! What to do?!

So I'm off to the US in a couple of weeks on what originally started purely as a business trip, but thanks to some good luck/blagging now includes 8 days free time! Particularly nice as it includes my birthday :)

I land in Boston at midday on June 15th (Sunday) and essentially have until the 23rd (Monday) to do whatever I like before making my way back to MA to meet my colleagues.

I'm not too worried about spending much time in Boston as - although I do want to see it - I'll no doubt be spending time there with work buddies. However, I definitely want to spend some time in NYC - where I've doubt I'll succumb and do the standard statue of liberty/empire state building/times square stuff. Apart from that maybe a little time in Philly (where I'll inevitably run up some stairs) or DC, but really don't have an itinerary.

I'm pretty well travelled, and whilst I expect I'll stay at hostels for a night or two I really don't want to spend the whole time getting drunk exclusively with other travellers in cliched touristy bars. (Drinking with locals in not so touristy bars is probably fine though!) When not at hostels I'm thinking about airbnb or potentially couchsurfing, although I may treat myself to a nice hotel on my birthday itself...

I love live music (rock/prog/metal blues), guitar stores, being in awe of nature, watching the sun set/rise over cool landscapes, meeting new people (obvious?!), geeky musings, fantasy books, self-deprecating humour, holding hands on the beach....meh I'm rambling now. Not quite so hot on shopping, sports, and most museums (would rather see history around me in real life than behind a glass cabinet).

Any...any ideas?

Suggestions for an exciting week in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Later this year I am taking three months to travel with my girlfriend and since we were saving for travelling we agreed instead of getting each other birthday presents we would organise a leg of our trip as a surprise.

She has already organised a week in Alaska in September and we will be in Thailand early October so I was planning to organise a week in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I visited Cambodia in 2005 and remember being blown away by the temples etc. I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there however.

Was hoping for suggestions on where to stay and also any good activities in the area. We are both in our late 20's and trying to do it on a budget. Last time I went Lonely Planet was a good resource for travelling in South East Asia, is this still the case?

Traveling in Argentina for 3/4 weeks! Need Reddit's advice!!

Dear /r/travel,

I'm traveling to Argentina for the first time for 3/4 weeks in July with a friend. We will be using BA as a home-base but want to travel around the rest of the country as well. We were thinking about hitting the slopes for 3 or 4 days and people have told us to see Iguazu Falls and go to wine country. We each have about $4000 to spend on this trip outside of airfare.

We'd like to know:

  • Whether you think it's worth it to spend part of our budget skiing for a few days (we were thinking Las Lenas) and if so, good places to stay, etc.

  • Worthwhile things to do in and around BA

  • Where else in the country you think we should see for sure

  • tips for traveling

  • really anything you think we should know or places you'd recommend.

We are a young couple and are down to get gritty, we like the outdoors but we also like nightlife!

25/m/Canadian, Never traveled, saved for 3 years, just starting to plan a world walk about. Looking for any tips/advice/ideas. Planning to leave Early Spring 2015

Was saving for a house, but after watching all my friends walk down the family life path it made me realize I'm not at all ready.

Where to go for a break this weekend from Kent, UK?

Spontaneously have a weekend free and want to make the most of it.

Can leave as early as tomorrow morning and return by Sunday evening required. Preferably would like to visit either France or Belgium. It would be great if we could visit Bruges.

Budget: Travel < £75 per person (i'll work out the rest)

Currently considering:

  • Calais by coach or foot passenger ferry - could go from Calais to other places.

  • Cornwall by car

  • South Wales by car

  • Snowdonia by car

  • Is Scotland possible by train at this short notice in budget?

Considering the possibility of driving in France/Belgium by car but I figure it's a lot of hassle to get all the kit to make my car conform to European standards (safety/breakdown gear etc) and inform my insurance at such short notice.

So... where would you go?

Andalusia insights? Also best beaches?

I'm planning a motorcycle tour in Spain. Right now my plan would be to fly into Madrid, kick it for a few days, then pick up a bike and ride to Barcelona then Valencia. From Valencia, I'm looking to head into Andalusia. When I get there, I'd be most interested in seeing like history and well, anything beautiful. Right now I'm budgeting 2 nights (arrival, full day, leave the next morning) in Granada, Cordoba, Seville, and Tarifa before heading back to Madrid.

Just looking for any insights into places I should spend more/less time, change, route suggestions (beautiful roads if anyone knows), which cities have the best nightlife. I'd probably like to spend one day just chilling on the beach, as I've never seen the Mediterranean sea so anywhere with a nice beach sounds good.

Emigration Project:, Connecting the emigration generation

Please share with friends abroad.

It's not where you are it's what you have to say

If you, friend or family member have emigrated get involved in the Scio project by tweeting something you miss about Ireland or some differences or great things about the country you have emigrated to or anything at all using the #ItsMyEire

All contributions are very much appreciated

Our aim is provide a comforting connection between those who have have emigrated with friends and family back home and to visualise the Irish diaspora living and working away from home. which will provide a link back to Irish culture. To do we have divided Scio into two parts an interactive app and installation.

Installation: The installation is a touch table. The interface will be a data visualisation which will represent a map of the world, where the user will be able to click on a continent of their choosing. This will display the messages which emigrants, family, friends and the general public have sent using a Twitter hashtag that have been tweeted from that continent and view Irish migration facts. We are in talks with the DAA for a permanent housing.

App: The app has a graphical representation of our installation where the user will be able to interact with tree such as viewing messages that people have sent using a Twitter hashtag eg #ItsMyEire and also send messages to the tree installation. The app will also have an instant messaging feature in which they can message their contacts.

In doing so we are hoping you would like to help in generating and promoting our unique hashtag so we have an app representation of the Irish diaspora.

The app will be available to download for andriod within the week

Cape Town to Nairobi overland

Has anyone had any experience with overland trips in southern Africa? I am comparing G Adventures and other prepackaged overland trips with a DIY approach.

I get the distinct impression that the DIY approach would be hard to pull off due to the maze of visa's, entrance fees into the game reserves and parks, and lack of easy un-packaged accommodations. Is this best done with a pre-packaged tour?

Travel ideas for Northwest Italy (Alps)?

Northwest Italy was strongly recomended by a friend due to great hiking, cheaper and lack of big crowds. I like to hike and I love good high alpine spots.

He recommended the Aosta valley as well as Courmayeur. Just wondering if anyone has been through there and has a recommendation. Right now the plan is to fly into Frankfurt (gets us into Europe) and then fly to Turin most likely.

Any recommendations? How to get upto the Aosta valley? We are pressed for time so I don't want to spend too much time on trains.

Traveling through Morocco - have collected some thoughts on our experience so far

I'll post the two sections that are the meatiest - Fez and general thoughts. They're a bit stream of consciousness with loose organization, so if that throws you off then I apologize in advance.

Fez

• Old town with a large market • Lots of history and interesting stories • Had one dinner in the medina in a hotel that overlooks much of the market - view was very good and we ate outside - weather was good • Went by one of the King's properties to see the decorative entry way early in the morning - within minutes there were street vendors coming out to sell things - camera batteries, postcards, etc ○ Vendors try to get you to hold the object they want to sell, and if you try to hand it back to them they hesitate to take it back (preferring obviously that you buy it) • Market ○ Market is said to have 12000 alleys or paths through it ○ Very few markings or signs to indicate where you are - would likely be easy to get lost if you didn't have a guide or took to many turns ○ Similar to market in Marrakech - see the same goods repeatedly throughout the market ○ Carpet shop we visited is unassuming, but had many carpets on the inside ○ Visited a tannery - got to the top of the building to look down on all the dye pits, etc ○ Only one dye pit that was colorful - a red one - the rest were whitish or earth tones ○ Smell was bad but not too bad - everyone was given a handful of mint to hold near their nose ○ Our tour was split into two groups (about 18 people each) and our guides hired extra locals to watch over us and keep us all together § We didn't know they were with us at first so I wondered if there was someone following us waiting for an opportunity to steal something ○ One person on our tour did take a picture of an older lady who was not happy to have her picture taken ○ Many people (those dressed up or selling something outside of a shop) would ask for money if their picture was taken ○ Shops with dried fruits or other edibles generally gave free samples ○ Many cats, a few dogs around ○ Market does not allow any motor vehicles - everything transported by human / donkey / cart ○ Many people carrying water around in large jugs by hand ○ Stalls for each shop tended to be akin to deep simple closets - a few electrical outlets and nothing else (no bathrooms or windows or water outlets) • Carpet buying experience ○ Assume our guide informed the sales people that we were interested as we were taken to a side room immediately after receiving our tea (just as the talk was starting) ○ Were extremely pushy, trying to get us to buy two carpets rather than one ○ One of the guides was giving a bit of guidance on what the more realistic cost of the carpet was, but eventually joined in trying to get us to buy two, so assume he gets some cut ○ Repeatedly said how they're a coop where the person creating the carpet gets 80% of the sale ○ Carpet we bought (we were told) took three months to make § Minimum wage, according to our guide, is about 2550DH a month (~$320 or so) § Unsure what the materials to make the rug would have cost (though we were repeatedly told the silk cost more than the carpet, which is clearly a lie) but certainly there's some material cost § But if the creator of the carpet gets 80% of what we buy it for, that's $5600 or 44800DH - equivalent to two year's salary at minimum wage, for only three months of work § Can't thing that carpet makers truly get that. Much in three months of effort, otherwise more people would make carpets § Also can't imagine that if the material costs for the carpet are high and the crafters have to wait for a carpet to sell to get any money that they can make it very long § So something is off (which we know), so again, buyer's remorse on the price paid ○ Told us that they don't know about what the carpet we bought in Turkey was made of, but that they used real cocoon silk (our bill of sale for the Turkish carpet just lists silk, not cocoon or artificial, but they didn't show us harvesting silk from cocoons - not that this indicates anything about the carpet we actually bought) ○ Repeatedly told me that my wife was beautiful and deserved such a nice carpet ○ Told me if the second carpet they wanted us to buy didn't sell in Chicago for at least $15000 that we could have it for free ○ Original list on the carpet we bought was 29800 (currency was unclear, but certainly wasn't DH and more likely Euro or USD) ○ Asked for $15000, then $11000, informed them I wasn't interested in spending more than $2000-$2500 ○ Said $5000 was too low (for them) but $11000 was too high (for us) ○ Told me they had another lady on our tour who was ready to buy the same rug for $15000 if we didn't want it § This was humorous, as it was clear we wouldn't pay that much for it and so if someone else was willing, they should have just sold it to her ○ Said $7500 was the lowest they would go ○ We offered $7000 as our final, they accepted ○ We were asked not to tell the others in our group what we paid - unsure if this is because we actually got a good deal (seems unlikely) or this is just another ruse (more likely) ○ As we walked up to their room above to complete the transaction, they brought the second carpet with trying to get us to buy both for $11000 § Apparently $5500 per carpet would have been acceptable - always buyers remorse in terms of price ○ Always trying to make the human connection - said they had been to Chicago or studied in the US for a few years ○ We talked to one other couple that purchased a carpet and they went through the same spiel (your wife is too beautiful for that carpet, you should look at this one instead)

Miscellaneous thoughts

• Comfort stops have separate areas for drivers and tour guides - they get free bathrooms / drinks ○ The tourists pay for toilets, mixture of traditional and modern - typically 1-2DH • Souvenir shops everywhere - mostly filled with the same cheap trinkets ○ Even in the Atlas mountains there are stops everywhere that advertise having tea or juice, bathrooms and offer souvenirs ○ Even at stopping points in the mountains where we took pictures, where there were no buildings, there were still people waiting along the road or in caves (not deep, not living in them) waiting for tour buses to come by - would bring out small items created from palm leaves for 10-20DH • Construction everywhere - larger buildings near some of the more major cities, houses in smaller ones ○ According to our guide, expats will return to Morocco during their vacation and build houses over the course of multiple years - no taxes on these structures until they're complete • Many backhoe loaders ○ Saw one case where construction crew digging a foundation with a BHL - drive down into the hole to grab a bucketful, and then drive back out to dump it • Majority of the Cat equipment we saw was old, assume current owners aren't the original • Major highways or cross country roads we took were in good condition • ATMs spit out 100-200DH notes, but people generally won't take those and instead want coins or smaller denominations • Random villages we encountered in the country would have many abandoned buildings - residents would tend to just build a new house when needed rather than leveling and building anew in the original spot • Clothing ○ Despite the heat, we saw many people in long sleeve shirts, even sweaters and sometimes coats ○ Also saw people wearing western suits ○ Seems very odd to us to wear these clothes in the heat ○ We had been concerned about what my wife would wear to avoid causing any issue - but our guide let us know that as foreigners we're free to wear anything (and he would tell us in case we were going anywhere that required a specific dress code) • Traffic ○ A lot of mopeds / motorcycles - many times people either aren't going too fast or their vehicles may not be capable ○ When turning left at intersections, people don't wait in single file lines, the pull up next to each other in a straight line through the intersection ○ People walk out into the street even though vehicles are coming (have videos of this) and many times don't even turn their heads to observe the oncoming traffic ○ For the most part, appear to observe lanes, but do hover between them especially when trying to get someone to pull over and let them pass ○ Have seen numerous times where people pull into oncoming traffic to pass cars ○ Haven't seen anyone driving on sidewalks as I saw in Russia ○ Our tour bus passed multiple vehicles (including trucks) while going uphill and downhill through the Atlas mountains ○ Not many traffic lights, instead use many roundabouts ○ Assume this (and a lack of cross walks / lights) leads to people pulling out in front of cars or crossing streets expecting drivers to slow down to avoid them ○ With our big vehicle, sometimes our driver would just pull out into oncoming traffic to turn around or pull onto side roads - never did anyone honk (and people here do use their horns) but we did get a few hand gestures and angry stares ○ We saw many children race after trucks or larger vehicles to grab onto the back and hitch rides • Out in the countryside ○ Still see some nomadic people - our guide told us that where you see tents or shelters with sheets of plastic for roofs that these are temporary and people continually move around ○ Saw many herds of sheep (fewer herds of cows) in the countryside ○ Can't imagine trying to keep a group of sheep or goats together as some of the herders were - they were very spread out ○ We did end up stopping a number of times for cows and sheep to cross the road ○ Certain areas (nearer cities or towns?) had a substantial amount of trash blowing around § Many times we'd be driving around and see miscellaneous blue plastic bags stuck in trees flapping in the wind ○ Between Casablanca and Fez we saw many pedestrian walkways over the highway - very often no roads or paths that appeared to directly connect to them - just free standing seemingly in the middle of no where ○ Probably hundreds of people we drove past in our circle of the country that lived on the countryside and would wait along the road for a public bus to be taken to a town (maybe hitchhiking is common? Don't know) • Air is dry - after a week my nose starting bleeding out of no where while walking down the street

Girlfriend and I deciding to live in either Europe, NYC, or Beijing...thoughts, insight?

Okay, okay, I realize that just saying Europe is really vague so let me clarify. My girlfriend is Austrian and I'm American so we're debating on her moving here to NYC where I currently live and work or me moving to wherever she finds a job in Europe - she just graduated. She's been doing internships - one in Berlin (where we met), London, and NYC - along with having worked in the past so she's quite qualified and will surely find something soon.

Now, for here coming to the states is a bit more of a process along with being much more expensive. My dad's German so me going to Europe is much, much easier. She's actually already got a job offer in London but is really shooting for Amsterdam which is the city I'd hope for as well. We're both a bit worried about the fact neither of us speak Dutch though.

NYC seems more exciting to her but I feel we'd have a better quality of life in Europe?

Now the Beijing thing, she's wanting to travel Asia for a few months and while she's doing that I've thought about taking a 6 month contract to teach English in Beijing. I'd get paid pretty well and my apartment there would be free - could be a nice thing to do before moving to Europe if that's what we do. I've lived abroad before but it's really hard to get insight on China - haven't been to the mainland and don't personally know anyone who has either. I'm really wondering how life for me in Beijing would be teaching English.

Also, I should say that I'm 25 and she's 23 just for reference.

Can anyone chime in on this? Maybe someone who's actually lived in Beijing, NYC, and one of the European cities mentioned? Tips, advice, or insight? Thanks!

24M; Europe backpacking trip (Eurorail) (June 23-Aug 1). Amsterdam-> Berlin-> Prague-> Munich-> Italy-> ferry to Greece and hopefully http://Mykonos..Tips/advice/must see and/or not see places!

As mentioned, I am a 24 year old male (And have been told I’m an attractive and fit Texan) traveling to Europe, leaving June 23rd (thought my grandma used frequent flier miles and could only get my return flight on Aug 12...But orientation for my dental school is Aug 5th, so I will have to find a way to leave early). I purchased the global Euro-rail pass, and my plan as of now is (I should also mention I have a round trip ticket from Texas to London, and a one way from London to Amsterdam, so where ever I end up after around 5-6 weeks I can just fly back to London...and hopefully figure out some way to get an early flight home without buying a new ticket). My plans are: Amsterdam-> Berlin-> Prague-> Munich-> Italy (starting at Venice-> Florence-> Rome) -> ferry to Greece and hopefully Mykonos. I am looking for helpful tips and advice on solo backpacking across Europe (I've done a bit of research: will get a travel belt, carry my backpack in front of me at railways and major metropolises, obviously use my common sense lol, and am thinking I will use a debit card and take out ~200USD from ATM's at a time to spend. (I am slightly limited on cash, but I have saved a few grand from working, though I’m looking to stay in hostels and possibly couch surf.

Looking for advice on:

1 What to pack (like 3-4 t-shirts, 1 long sleeve, 1 jacket, 2 pairs of jeans, socks, underwear, a camera [no cell phone], passport [with a copy of it just in case], debit card, my cowboys boots, an extra pair of shoes?)...anything else?

2 Must see places, places to avoid, important tips and advice, where to go online to find more info, places online to find couches/hostels, etc... I do want to do a fair share of partying (I don’t smoke, or do any crazy drugs; though I have experimented with a few minor ones that were fun [and I'm not against my friends who smoke or do crazy stuff, as long as they're not messing up their life, or stuff like that]), but I would also like to stay safe, meet interesting people and experience the culture, as well as visiting culturally significant sites/monuments/museums. And get advice on how to avoid getting scammed, ripped off, find good deals, and most of all..... HAVE A BLAST AND MAKE IT A TRIP OF A LIFETIME (before I have to settle down for dental school:)

PADI certification in Palawan as well as other travel tips

Hi, me and my SO have been thinking of going to Thailand to get our PADI open water diver certificates next winter.

However, our diver friend recommended Palawan islands in the Philippines instead. I've been to Thailand and surrounding countries before, so going to Palawan sounds like a more interesting option.

So I wanted to ask anyone that's been there, are the budget oriented diving school options as plentiful in Palawan as in west coast Thailand and are they any good? And how's the dive sites?

Also, since we will probably end up spending a few weeks there, are there any places nearby worth exploring? Preferably without risk of decapitation by the Abu Sayyaf?

I've been offered a two week trip to anywhere... where would you go, and why?

My husband and I have been offered a two week trip with his parents (who we both get along with very well) anywhere in the world. We are overwhelmed with the possibilities and want to open ourselves up to some new options.

Here's where we've been: England France Italy Wales Scotland Australia New Zealand Bermuda Antigua Anguilla

We are looking to plan this trip sometime in 2015, most likely May or August to line up with our schedules. We are open to almost anywhere, we both have a love of history and culture. We really loved both our "doing nothing but sitting on the beach" honeymoon in Antigua and our two week crazy tourist trip in London, Paris, and Rome.

We are crazy lucky to be offered this opportunity...

So, Reddit, where would you go if you could travel anywhere?

r/travel, what unexpected costs did you come across while planning for travel?

Someone just pointed out to me that vaccines can be pretty pricey. I also see lots of tentative travellers seriously underestimating the cost of comprehensive travel insurance (medical and otherwise).

So what are some costs you've come across "the hard way"? Let's try and compile a nice beginner's list...

Central America Advice

My brother will be backpacking south through Mexico to Panama and everywhere in between over the course of 2 months. I have 3 weeks where I'm planning on joining him. The dates are from July through August.

I'm a bit weary of the temperature as I'm not the biggest fan of very hot and humid weather.

My brother and I are mid-20s and have backpacked around south america and asia. Happy to stay on the traditional backpackers trail. Would like a mix of culture/activities/partying and hoping to do a bit of island hopping by the coast. Not looking for a full itinerary or anything, just some suggestions!

Would you be able to recommend where you think I should start and end my trip? Thanks for any help you can give me

Anybody been to Kas, Turkey?

Where did you stay? Recommend any hotels or hostels? What was your favorite part of your stay?

My bride to be and I are planning on spending 3 days there in September. Looking for some tips!

Looking for a place to disconnect for a few months

Hi!

I don't know if this falls in the right subreddit but here goes.

I'm looking for a place to disconnect from the world for a while, six months or so. I need a cabin, a house, an apartment in a village or something similar.

I need to be surrounded by nature, good walking routes, jogging routes etc and if close to the ocean then the better.

I live in Europe but would gladly consider flying to another continent if it seemed convenient.

My budget will be around 7.000-10.000 Euros, and that includes food, bills, everything (except wifi;)

Any tips, any locations?

And what am I planning? Meditation, reading, relaxing.

Greatful.

Seeking travel buddy for year long trip through SE Asia from summer 2015- summer 2016

Hi Reddits!

I am looking for someone to join me on a year long backpacking adventure around SE Asia. I'm starting to save now, budgeting 12-15K for the year. I plan to travel quite inexpensively, staying in hostels, taking buses between cities and eating/drinking cheaply. That being said, my main goals are to learn, see and have a blast! This is a year off of work for me so I want it to be a relaxing, wonderful time.

I plan to leave from Chicago toward the beginning of July 2015 and return about a year later.

I am a female, 22yrs old and looking for a travel buddy of about the same age and either gender. I want to have an agenda for cities/travels to each, but other than that I prefer to travel spontaneously. I don't know exactly which countries I am going to, but definitely want to hit Thailand and Cambodia. I'm open to suggestions!

Message me for more details so I can get to know you. This is a big leap for me, as I'll be leaving a great corporate job at a young age but I believe there is truly no better time to drop everything and explore the world.

Lastly, please only message me if you are serious about this. Although it's a year out, I am 100% going on this trip and hope you'll feel the same way if you inquire. Thanks!

27 F travelling to Mauritius for 4 weeks for a uni elective. Wondering if there is enough to do over 4 weeks?? If so what should I definitely not miss?

Visiting my girlfriend in Mexico for three weeks

Hi there /r/travel!

I'm going to visit my mexican girlfriend in Mexico for more than three weeks in June. It's going to be a bit of a culture clash honestly, I've never been out of Europe (I'm german). I'm looking for a bit of basic advice/experience about Mexico for the oblivious bloke I am.

Quick background story -- we've met in germany last autuum, and we had a great time. She was studying/working here for about a year, and had to leave in february. Yes, I know it's a virtually impossible distance (1/40th of the distance to the moon actually). I'm not looking for relationship advice, and I honestly don't know where we're headed together, but I want us to have a great time, obviously. I should probably mention I'm not speaking spanish, we're always using english.

Now, I know about Mexico being a traditional place with rather catholic, conservative morals for relationships and families, with very tight bonds between family members and regular gatherings. She's living with her parents in Mexico City (we're both in our mid-20s) and it seems they are quite open-minded, inviting me to stay at their house, altough in a seperate bedroom - at least for the few days we're going to spend at their parents'. We're probably going to meet lots of her family and friends there, and of course everybody knows about the german boyfriend by now...

For the actual travelling part -- we plan to visit Oxaca, Cancun and Acapulco within two weeks (the details are with her). I'm fairly excited about everything (as is she) and would just like to know if there are any important or mundane things I should consider in preperation for visiting Mexico. Perhaps even surprise her with knowledge about places to visit or things to do. The hardest part (literally) will be to keep my hands off her in her parents place, and I truly want to respect that, but it has been months. So yeah, I'm looking forward to us being abroad together, and if I can throw some insider knowledge in the mix, it would be really nice I think.

Gruß aus Berlin!

I want to travel to DC, I'll be in Annapolis. What are good agencies/websites to check out?

I'll be in Annapolis, Maryland for a few days and I wanted to visit Washington DC after my 5 days in DC. What's the best way to do so? I've heard trains are an efficient and cheap way of getting there. Are the museums there expensive?

Are there any resources or websites I can use to set this up? Thanks everyone!

Also, is DC worth the trip? I've never been.

What are your favorite multi-day treks in Ecuador or Peru?

Ill be in Ecuador tomorrow via Colombia and am itching to get good use out of my hiking boots.

Im looking for suggestions for great multiday treks in the countries listed. Preferably ones that are quiet and have great views.

Im open to the idea of buying camping gear in Quito so if anyone has information on trekking through these countries indepently Id like that as well.

Thanks!

r/travel, help me squeeze out the best out of three weeks in Peru!

You guys helped me a lot 18 months ago when I went to Cambodia and Vietnam. This time I'm tackling Peru and I want to squeeze to best of it. Here are some infos:

  • Three weeks, starting probably from September 29th to October 19th

  • I can stay free in Lima; a family friend has a place there and might come in Peru at the same time as I am, so spending the first few days with a real Peruvian to learn about the place and customs might be a good start.

  • Budget is about 2000 USD excluding tickets. I do not need extra premium rooms but tourist-friendly accommodations are still nice.

The plan right now:

  1. Lima (The city, Pachacamac)

  2. Ica (Nasca, Tambo Colorado, Huchachina)

  3. Arequipa (Salt Lake, Colca Canyon, Misti Volcano, Laguna de Salinas)

  4. Cuzco (Macchu Pichu)

  5. Flight back to Lima for flight home (Montreal)

General questions:

  1. Anything I need to book really far ahead or in October I can pretty much show up on the same day all the time?

  2. How easy is it to go around if I speak pretty much only english?

  3. How much do you usually tip a private tour guide if you're alone?

  4. Any tourist traps / kind of crafty beggars I should be aware of?

My previous trip would've been much more boring without reddit to guide me and I hope I'll be just as lucky to have r/travel's help this time. Please help me make this memorable!

Many MANY thanks in advance :)

Backpack through Asia alone is a bad idea?

Well as the titel says. I'am 22 years old and I have allways wanted to backpack through Asia and since i don't have any friends who share that intrest I have decided to do it by myself.

The only worries i have is being mugged or potentionally just get bored. I have no time frame for the trip at all the only thing is that I want to be away for atleast a year and keep on traveling untill i run out of money.

The places i want to visit is Vietnam Thailand China Singapore Malasyia Philipeans and Japan.

I have a budget on around 200 000 sek (30 000 dollars) I feel like this should be enough to substain myself for a year in Asia but i have no idea. (How long can i afford to stay in each place?)

And since im pretty new to traveling aswell (Been to a forgein country maybe 10 times in my life so far) And allways with parrents or relatives.

Is there any possibility of running into other backpackers and maybe ''team up'' so to speak?.

I appologize for the bad spelling in advance.

I'd love to travel, but I'm not sure when...

Okay, so this is a first time post on this subreddit for me. I'll be (hopefully) starting university in september, doing a degree in law. However it has always been and always will be my dream to travel. I don't want to do it too late in life but I know it might be a bit harder to achieve this if I've got a career in law. I know it probably seems as if I haven't planned this and it's just spare of the moment, but there is nothing I want to do more. I'd love a job in law and figured it would be a good way to fund a trip around the world, but with it being such a hectic career, I'm worried that I'd just never be able to get any time... - When did you start exploring, and did your career/job interfere at all? Would really appreciate any suggestions/ideas/advice! Sorry, I don't know whether I'm being naive about this, just figured you guys would know some good tips!

Traveling to Switzerland in late July/early August - what to wear; how to dress?

Kind of looking for guidance in what types of temperatures I should be expecting. For reference, where I live (southern US), summers are hot and humid - regularly breaks 100 degrees fahrenheit during the summer months.

Here's where I'll be traveling:

  • Lucerne

  • St. Moritz

  • Bernese Oberland

  • Zermatt

  • Geneva/Montreux

What are the temps like? How's the weather? Is one city cooler/hotter than another due to altitude? Thanks for your help travel!

I have 3 months and 5k to backpack around Europe. Where does r/travel recommend I go and what do I absolutely need to see?

I am a 25 year old female who will be traveling alone - So safety is a priority. I'll be in Greece for a month for an archaeological excavation from June to the second week of July, then I'm thinking Italy, France (Rock En Sein), Netherlands, and the UK.

I have from mid July to mid October. I've never traveled anywhere so I am in no way experienced or travel savvy.

I'm much more interested in picturesque landscapes/places and cultural heritage (archaeologist) than I am in touristy stuff. Thanks!

Bag Recommendations For Two Week Trip In Europe.

I am going to be traveling from California to Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, and Amsterdam. I am looking to bring a roller bag (to leave in my rooms and hold my clothes) and a backpack (to bring on my daily adventures and carry my camera and small things.) I was looking at this roller bag and this backpack.

This is my first time out of country so I am not well versed in luggage. I am looking to make a smart purchase on luggage that lasts a long time and can be used to store things efficiently. Maybe it would be best to buy my bags in a set. I'm not even sure how to properly search for the set I have in mind. Suggestions on specific products and general ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help. You guys are awesome.

Edit: *I am looking for a backpack that has a front strap so that I can strap the backpack to the roller bag while traveling. Also, because I plan on skateboarding while wearing the backpack and it would be nice to have as little bounce from the bag as possible. Thanks again.

Traveling to Playa Del Carmen in November (Questions)

Will the first week of November have nice weather?

Is it worth it to get scuba certified before going?

Any tours worth buying?

Considering swimming with manatees or dolphins, would you recommend? Has anyone been to the Aviary? There are mixed reviews online and would like to hear firsthand.

Recent college graduate and clueless foreign traveler who wants to travel to Europe before entering the workforce. Thoughts appreciated!

Hi all,

As a recent college graduate, I have the month of June to travel, and would appreciate any thoughts on what to do or where to go. I may be traveling by myself, and--as I haven't studied abroad--I definitely want to hit all the major tourist sites, as well as truly get a feel for Europe.

Place: I'm fairly certain that I want to go to Europe, and would like to see Italy, Spain, and France (possibly Switzerland?). Not to be cliche, but I'd like to see stuff like Parisian streets, major Italian landmarks, etc.

Transportation: What's the easiest way to get around? I've started looking at the Eurail; is that the best option for someone like me who wants to see a few cities?

Lodging: I have no idea what hostels are like, and my gut says to stick to hotel rooms. Does anyone have any thoughts on lodging whatsoever, or where I would look for prime (cheap) hotels?

Timing: Perhaps I could make the trip 2-3 weeks, and spend 3-4 days each in major countries? Is this feasible?

Budget: I'd like for the trip to be on the cheaper side (not including airfare), but I don't know much about costs. Is a budget of $1000-1500 reasonable for what I'm looking forward to doing?

Again, if you can't tell...I'm kinda clueless here and would love some advice on any of these aspects. Thanks so much r/travel! I hope I provided enough information to help guide me.
