What is the cheapest way to travel to and stay in the South of France?

This summer, two of my friends and I are planning to travel to the South of France for two weeks or so this summer. We're all writers and so this whole trip is really in aid of our writing. When we are there, we plan to do quite a lot of walking and observing the countryside. We would all like to do the romanticised vagrant traveller thing, where we sleep under the stars and pick fruit from the trees, but we're also very aware of how unrealistic this is.

We're based in the West Midlands (UK). The cheapest tickets we've found are about £85 non-flexible return with Eurostar to Paris and then a bus the rest of the way, but we're open to much more creative (and hopefully inexpensive) ways.

Thanks in advance (:
