Traveling with anxiety but wanting to be social, any tips?

i love traveling, ive been around Europe a couple times, but every time i go im very anti social, i never go out to the night life, i never talk to strangers and never really meet people.I always use hotels instead of hostels and i always use cabs instead of public transportation. I always go with a friend who has anxiety as well, we both talk about how we want to meet people while traveling and how it would be cool if we met fellow travelers who we continue to travel with afterwards. Every time we go traveling it just seems so difficult to approach people from these other countries with other languages and such.

I always get bad anxiety when going to bars/clubs because i always end up freezing up and not knowing what to say to people, being intimidated by the language barriers as well as not having the balls to talk to people and dance(im a terrible dancer), and im not to big on drinking, although i will drink and can enjoy it, i just hate the process of drinking as i have acid reflux that acts up when drinking alcohol and it ends up making me feel sick/painful before im even buzzed.

Im traveling to Montreal for a bit this summer and ive been told its a very social place, i want to try and break out of this anxiety and meet people this time traveling, im going to force myself to walk/take public transportation. Im always wondering should i stay at a hostel? ive heard hostels force social situations and you get to meet people easier. How is hostel life? are the people usually friendly?

Any thing any other fellow travelers with anxiety do to be more social when traveling? any tips to meet people while traveling?
