Planning a ~6 month trip to South America. Budget

Hello all,

Just a few quick questions. Or really just one.

I'm in the process of planning an extended trip to South America for later this year, or possibly next, but I keep running in to a wall.

I have locations, time-frames, activities that are "must sees" in my mind, but I also know myself pretty well in that I can guarantee I'll be making plenty of detours a long the way, which is making it difficult to plan out a budget (or how much I need to save before leaving).

I've looked up costs of food, hostels, transportation, and other miscellaneous costs, but, in my experience, it's generally a little more complicated than that.

I will be doing the standard route (Ecuador, down the west coast through Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, heading through Uruguay and finishing in Brazil, possibly Columbia to start) over a 6 month period, possibly longer if money lasts.

For anyone who's traveled extensively in South America, how much did a trip of this length cost? Or if you haven't done this whole trip, how much would, say, a month in Peru cost?

Keep in mind I am planning on living as cheaply as possible (hostels, food stands, etc.) and living out of a backpack.

Any help would be appreciated!
