Airline won't take responsibility for cancellation - who is in the right?

International flight I was on got hit by a bird as it was landing, turning a one hour stopover into a two-day stopover (hotel, transport thereto, and meals provided). The airline representative assured us a full refund was guaranteed, for both the flight and the hotel-time lost at our destination. However, when we followed up with the airline, they claimed they had no liability as the birdstrike fell under force majeure, releasing them from any responsibility to us beyond stopover accommodation, etc, and also that their representative made no such assurances (which is a bare-faced lie). Anyone familiar with the protocols care to chime in?
