Considering traveling by myself for the first time to Iceland...advice?

I live in the northeast U.S., and have ~$1000 (~100,000 isk) to spend on a week long vacation this summer. Iceland seems really beautiful, and it's pretty high on my list of potential travel destinations.

On that budget, about half my money would go toward a plane ticket, leaving half for food/lodging. The budget is a goal, and not strict (i.e., if I found myself going beyond it a bit, it wouldn't be a big deal). How realistic, cost-wise, would this be? Would I still be able to find lodging, feed myself, and be able to tour around the country a bit?

Has anyone else traveled to Iceland solo? Wherever I go this summer, I'll be going by myself, and this is the first time I'm considering going abroad alone. How difficult is it to visit this country and somewhat spontaneously do things? (i.e., if I'm in Reykjavik and want to visit X waterfall or X village in a few hours without a rental car, how hard/expensive would that be to make happen?)
