Reddit, help me explore the east coast of the USA!

I'm American, but I've spent most of my life living in the UK. While I've been lucky enough to see some amazing things in this country, I feel like I hardly know my own home! So, my boyfriend and I are planning to road trip from Myrtle Beach to Boston next year.

My family has an annual reunion in Myrtle Beach every year, so that's why that's our starting point, and my Dad will be living just outside Boston by then so we want to end up there. Ideally I'd like our trip to take around four days, but if there are things that we absolutely have to see then we can be flexible!

My very first thoughts are to follow this rough plan:

  • Myrtle Beach, SC to Richmond, VA (explore & stay overnight)

  • Richmond, VA to Washington, DC (explore, then move on)

  • Washington, DC to Philadelphia, PA (explore & stay overnight)

  • Philadelphia, PA to New York City, NY (explore & stay overnight)

  • New York City, NY to Boston, MA

While we don't want to spend a huge amount of money, we won't be travelling until next summer so we have some time to save. I'd really appreciate any advice you could offer - what we should see, where's great to eat on the way, should we go an entirely different route than the above?!

We both really love music and food and my boyfriend has a big interest in history, but any recommendations along any lines are more than welcome. I've only ever spent a lot of time in the states that I'm from or that I have family in (FL, WV, GA) so I want to rack up some miles and see some awesome things. Thanks in advance!
