Traveling in Greece - how can I move around within the country?

I'm traveling with a friend. We'll touring his country (Romania), my country (Serbia) and then we'll take a greyhound bus from Serbia to Thessaloniki.

We'll be at Thessaloniki around July 11, and we booked our flight back to the states in July 20th. We don't want to pass through Greece in a dash, so we're avoiding to take anything directly from Thessaloniki to Athens. Currently, our plan is Thessaloniki -> Katerini -> Larissa -> Almiros -> Molos -> Athens.

My question is basically how can we get from Thessaloniki to Athens? Is it affordable to rent a car? If not by car, what are the other choices?

Our budget is maybe 600$ each, buuuuuut it's flexible so we could get more cash.

I'm very daring so I'd hitchhike, but my friend isn't so keen on it.
