Going to New York, Washington DC, and Toronto on vacation with family; Any suggestions of what to see/do?

My family (40F, 42M, 19M, 4F) and I (16F) are going on a trip to New York, Washington DC, and Toronto (Niagara Falls). We don't have any specific ideas on what to do besides shopping. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
