My friend and are planning a backpacking adventure when our midlife crisis' hits in 2 years, and while both he and I have traveled much of a lot of different destinations around the world, most of it has been short vacations here or there, or places we have both lived. And while we have a decent knowledge of traveling, our types of travel have been hotels and apartments (or houses if living there.) This trip however, we will be using hostels for the first time, as we are aiming for a 2 month long trip, starting in Spain (heading down to Morocco,) then making our way through Europe and ending our trip in October in Germany.
I have done quite a bit of research and have an understanding of hostel pricing as well as getting around, but as for budgeting for the other stuff, since I have always just done 1 week trips, my family has always just eaten at tourist restaurants and not really cared or worried about going a bit over budget in a few days. So I guess my the question that I have is, (long winded, I know) how have fellow backpackers fared in your daily spending on long term trips.
Sights, getting around, eating in markets/vendors/cafes/attractions etc. Do any of you have ballparks for your trips? A roundabout of what you were averaging per day for spending when backpacking? I know that obviously Europe/Morocco varies extremely in expense depending on where exactly you are, but information is always useful. We thought we could get away with less then $30 a day in many places, but quite a bit more in others from what I have google-fu'ed so far. If you did keep track, if you could post where you were also traveling would be of use as well.
Thanks!
Edit: If you have any "absolutely-must-visit-hole-in-the-wall" places, feel free to let us know about them!!
