Leaving the United States for the first time ever. USA > Russia > Germany. Questions need answering!

Hello /r/travel,

I'm completely new to all of this and I am really excited to leave... but I'm not really sure about what is completely necessary for me to do.

I am leaving the United States August 4th, staying in Russia until the 11th, and then staying in Hamburg until mid September. I've got the flight taken care of, I have the plane ticket I am going to purchase ready... but I'm unsure of what else I need.

I'm in the process of getting together documentation for my passport. I'm considering just going in and getting it done one day in D.C. so I don't have to worry about back and forth stuff in the mail, etc.

I'm worried about VISAs... I don't know a thing about getting a VISA for Russa. Will I have to go into D.C. to their Embassy? Also, will I have to do the same for Germany?

Is it possible to just get the VISA when I arrive there in the airport?

What else am I missing? I'm covered on saving money, where I'm staying in Germany... Russia is still kind of up in the air, but I figured I'd just look for a Hostel when I get there. Not too worried about my ability to figure out situations on the fly.

Thank you!

Austin
