Where are some good nature areas to visit in Canada during the wintertime?

Starting Point: Texas! My boyfriend and I have always been fascinated with the cold landscape, so we wanted to brave the cold and experience a real winter, while still staying within our continent.

Dates of Travel: We are looking primarily around early/mid November (before Thanksgiving) or early mid January (after New Years) but will do any time in between November-February.

Budget: We have a very low budget, so we wanted to keep it to free or cheap parks/trails, city exploring, maybe some mushing. We also wanted to keep to one region, so no going from the east coast to the west coast.

Interests: So far I have found a few areas that seem interesting, like the Northern Lights in Manitoba (although I need to do more research to see when is a prime time to visit) the polar bears/elk in Wapusk, the Back county in Jasper, Auyuittuq National Park. Basically any place where there is beautiful forests or mountains, ice canyons, or any place that doesn't look like Texas.
