A friend and I previously did a roadtrip in Iceland and we loved it. We are both photography and landscape fans and we enjoy driving ourselves around at our own pace, so we decided to do the same in Norway.
Here's our basic plan at the moment.
10 days early September with a rented car:
- Arrive in Oslo, visit a bit/sleep there.
- Drive to Geilo, sleep there. The road to Geilo seems pretty awesome in terms of sights.
- Drive to Bergen. Again another nice route, with fjords, waterfalls and a cool valley.
- Sleep in Bergen, spend 1-2 days there. 1 day to visit and enjoy the place, second day if we want to do something like deep-sea fishing.
- Either visit Voss and enjoy some activities (rafting, waterfall rappeling, fishing if we didn't spend the extra day in Bergen) or take a scenic trip via Aurlandsfjorden -> Stalheim and Aurlandsdalen -> Sognefjorden -> Sogndal, where we sleep.
- Leave Sogndal, check out Jostedal Glacier and go ice kayaking/trekking, then take the ferry across Geirangerfjord and stop/sleep in Geiranger.
- From Geiranger we'd go to Alesund (1 day), checking out Ringebu and arriving in Lillehammer (1 day), then back to Oslo (1 day) and then fly back home.
Interests
- I'm a huge fan of landscapes, wildlife and flora and care very little for modern cities.
- My friend's got a problem with his right leg that prevents him for any kind of intensive hiking. That's worth pointing out since it prevents any kind of steep climb/extended hiking.
- Glacier walking, ice lagoon boating, dog-sledding, rappelling, etc. are all pretty great things we did and enjoyed in Iceland. Anything similar would be great.
So my questions are:
- September. Is it a good month considering the plan?
- 10 days. Does that seem sensible enough to actually see the country, as opposed to barreling through?
- Any car rental companies you would recommend? We need an automatic.
- The Alesund/Lillehammer part is kind of hazy. Lillehammer seems... rather boring, but it's a stopover point. Any suggestions there or for the road back to Oslo?
- Are there any other stops/activities we should consider on our path in general?
Cheers!
