I am planning a trip to Laos and Sri Lanka next February/March. I just bought tickets via the Air Asia discount special, now I'm getting down to the nitty gritty.
I've been reading a lot about Laos and have tentatively decided to spend four days in Pakse (via rail from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, then bus) then fly to Luang Prabang for another four before flying out to Colombo. I'll use both towns as a base for day trips to nearby attractions. I am a senior and not interested in tubing, partying or narcotics; Vang Vieng is not on the itinerary.
I would appreciate advice from those who have been to Laos on these questions or any other suggestions:
- Is adding Vientiane at the expense of a day each in the other locations worth it?
- Are there local ferries or cheap boats (not speed boats) from Pakse to the waterfalls and the 4000 islands? If so, can they be visited as a day trip or should I stay overnight at one of the islands?
- Is there a particular section of the Bolaven Plateau best to visit on a day trip?
- What are the 'must-sees' and 'must-dos' in Luang Prabang and district. I read about the Gibbons experience, but I'm too old for zip-lining.
All of the cars with drivers I have found on the web in both cities seem incredibly expensive. Is it easy to find an English-speaking 'driver with car' via accommodation or just checking at taxi locations?
All suggestions welcomed. TIA.
