Heading to Norway for two weeks soon though would love to travel Europe after, would greatly appreciate any advice!

Hello all, first post here in /travel and I'm overthinking everything to the point I'm exhausted! I'm self employed, have the flexibility to travel for up to two months, have never traveled internationally before, and since this is my first visit to overseas I want to make the most of my trip.

I'm traveling to Norway in early July to visit a friend who is hosting me for a minimum of two weeks, this part is set in stone. At this point my itinerary is to fly from US to Norway, though after that I am completely at a loss. I would like to travel to France for up to a week and hope to catch at least one stage of the Tour de France at the end of July, then possibly head to the UK for a week.

My primary concerns are flying, particularly how to book such a trip when my schedule is so wide open? I don't want to be tied to a specific airport on a set date/time. Is it best to book a roundtrip flight from US to Norway over a large period, such as 45 days (friend/host can accommodate travel back to airport for return flight) then book smaller trips from Norway to elsewhere?

I would greatly appreciate any advice, points, direction, and so forth!
