Beach vacation destination in the western hemisphere for August?

Hi all,

The wife and I need a vacation and are planning one for August. We would like to control costs (to a degree) and so are thinking western hemisphere (ideally North America and/or the Caribbean, though we travel to Western Europe semi-frequently and wouldn't be against it). Lastly, our goal for this trip is to do next-to-nothing. We've done adventurous trips, we've done exotic locales, but we've never explored our own backyard together, and we need a relaxing break from work and stuff, so we're planning to sit on a beach and do very little as much as possible.

Other Considerations:

  • Airfare from NYC for less than $750pp is necessary; less is ideal. Hotel rooms for less than $250 / night are also necessary; again, less is ideal. Bonus appreciation for suggestions for places with Marriott hotels - I have a lot of points with them (though this isn't strictly necessary).

  • We realize that in August, it's very, very hot in certain traditional beachy places, so we're open to suggestions outside of, say, Mexico, or wherever.

  • With the above being said, we've done Vegas in August and found it bearable, so if it's somewhere with a hot, dry heat that's fine if you're under an umbrella, and if that will save us some serious dough, we're up for that, too.

  • We're open (God, it feels weird to say this) to all-inclusive type places, though we fear that a place like Sandals will be full of people who we have very little in common with.

  • We'd like to have a drink or two on the beach and with dinner, so alcohol-free places are out.

  • We prefer saltwater / ocean beaches, but we're open to ideas of places on other bodies of water.

  • Nearby attractions of a "natural wonder" or "historical site" kind are a bonus, but (again, for the first time when planning a vacation ever) are not necessary.

  • We have some basic skills in languages other than English, and we're not afraid to go to a non-English speaking country.

Any ideas, /r/travel? If so, thanks in advance! Help us chill out this summer, please!
