So I thought it would be fun to climb this mountain while I'm in Borneo, had some thoughts about altitude sickness but didn't felt that much of it, slight headache. So the journey started with a bus transport from Kota Kinabalu, went to the busstation and found the bus, I was the first one there, asked when the bus leaves, "when the bus is full" said the driver.. 90 minutes later we're on the way :) Came to the base of the mountain and checked into the hotel, it's all paid for so Breakfast, lunch and dinner was included (lunch was a sandwich) My room was a dorm with 8 beds, the malays in the other beds kept quiet so I got a few hours of sleep. 6 am next morning it was breakfast, buffet so it was ok. Went up to the reception and got my guide. Starting altitude was 1800 meters so we were pretty high up already, next stop were at 3270 meters. So we started walking. As usual I started walking at the usual tempo, guide told me to slow down.. didn't really knew what he meant, but I found out like 30 minutes later :) The trail consists of 98% steps in all kind of formats, so if you have a fetish for steps then this is something for you.. The trail from the base is 6 km up to Laban rata guesthouse. They have small shelters every km where you can rest. In my case I rested like every what it felt 20 meters, and the end it was walk 5 meters and rest for a bit. Sure I am not in the best shape, I do walk alot, but this was something else. After like 7 hours of torture we were at the guesthouse.. 3 hours later the dinner was served so I tried getting some sleep. It was colder in the dorms than outside.. Dinner was buffet again, it was ok. After dinner there wasn't much to do, pitch black outside and cold and windy. So went back to dorm to get some sleep again. Some stayed at the dinner place and played cards or chatted. 2 am next morning the alarmclock sounded and we got up for the final climb. Small breakfast and we set of, pitch black so needed some flashlight to see, the climb now was in the beginning more steps and after awhile bare stone, it was dry so ok to walk on.( about 2.5 kilometer to the top) There was a rope you could hold on to. At some places you had to or you would fall down and die.. It got colder and windier aswell. You couldn't see much and it didn't help when you looked up and way up you saw someone elses light (maybe 30 minutes further up..) the high altitude, no visibility cold and windy.. I almost regretted I got up at 2 am :) I am not sure how long it took up to the top, but I heard some screams and then I knew someone made it.. The last part was a free for all climb, bare rocks, and on top a small sign. 4095 meters. Up here it was really cold and the wind very strong, so many just got up and then left because it was so cold. Since I was slower I got to see some of the sunrise and then it cleared up some so we got to see the surroundings. Still extremely cold and windy so i started to climb down again. Walking down on bare rock and pretty steep didn't do good for the knees, also had to hold on to the rope at some places or you would fall down and die :) . At least we had light on the way down so got some nice pictures. At 07.30 we were down at the guesthouse again, so about 5 hours of climbing, 5-10 minutes of chaotic trying to get some pictures with freezing hands.. Breakfast again and 08.30 we started walking down. Thought this would go faster, but not really, at about 13.30 we were down at the base... In conclusion this sounded like a good idea but ended up as torture, I will never do anything like this again thats for sure. Beautiful surroundings but this was way tougher than I thought, just steps and at a few places jumping on rocks trying to get up (for over a kilometer..)
