Living in Italy for a year - where should I go in Europe?

So I'm from the UK and studying in Bologna, Italy for a year. This is obviously a prime opportunity to travel around somewhere more interesting than my own country :P

I'm looking for suggestions of places to go and things to see, be they in Italy or anywhere else that's easily accessible from Italy. Hell, I could even be convinced to venture to the other side of the Med and visit places in Africa.

Requirements:

  • Accessible from Bologna without too much difficulty

  • Cheap. Ish. Mostly no more than say, £300-500 a go. The cheaper the better, so I can fit more trips in :3

  • Ideal for short trips, like weekends or 3-day weekends. There'll be a handful of opportunities for week-long trips, so ideally special locations.

Other Notes: Being from the UK, I've been around Europe a little bit. Barcelona is already done, been to France (but mostly northern France) and Germany (... mostly Berlin).

Interests: Looking for all sorts of things. Great places to party would be awesome, but I love history and things you can look at in wonder. Love some adventure.

Ideas I've already had include going to Monaco next May for (you guessed it) the Grand Prix. Not budget, by any means, but too good to miss.

Any ideas welcome, places you've been, places you've heard are great, classic holiday destinations, hidden gems, places off the beaten path, all of it :D
