I'm thinking of doing a national park road trip over 4-5 weeks starting in September either solo or with a friend. What are the best parks to incorporate on such a trip?

I have until mid-October before I start my new job, so I am looking to take a road trip to see some more of my own country. I am from Minneapolis and am looking for parks to the west only.

I definitely want to see Yellowstone, Crater Lake (if it's not too far out of the way), Arches, Canyonlands, Yosemite, and some others. I've only been to Sequoia and Glacier at this point.

  • Have you ever gone on an extended park trip like this?

  • What are the best parks to go to in which I could spend a couple days and feel fulfilled? I don't want to go somewhere for two days when I should really be there for a week to really experience it; I'd rather save it for its own trip in that case.

  • Do you have any suggested routes to take or itineraries to go by?

  • How much would you expect camping to cost per person in most parks? Are there places to camp for free?

  • Any essential tips for dealing with a long road trip?

  • Finally, can you think of any better way to spend a month of free time? Serious question. Flights are pretty expensive at the moment.
