So my girlfriend and i have been saving money for the last year or better so we can quit our jobs in April or May of 2015 to travel. If we stick to the plan we will both have 30k and we are both debt free.
We will do 3 months touring National parks in The United States. We will be camping the whole time to save money. Then we are planning to go to Guatemala for 2 to 3 months to study Spanish. After we get a good grasp of the Spanish language we will start heading south traveling a month or so then doing a few more weeks of Spanish lessons. We will do this until we run out of money.
I lived in and around Guatemala for 4 months in 2010 so i know it can be very cheap to live in Central America. I am assuming South America will be similar, but i would still like to look for opportunities to make some extra cash on the trip so we can stay gone for longer. Ideally how i would like this to work is that we travel until we find a place that we really like and stay for a few months. We would not be looking for a full time job by any means. We would just be looking for a 20ish hour a week job were we could make enough money to pay our expenses in said country without taking any money from our bank account back in the states.
Also we are from Tennessee so its only appropriate that we do a good amount of volunteer work on this trip. For those of you who don't know Tennessee is known as the volunteer state. That being said i was wondering if there are any volunteer organizations that would provide housing and meals if we were to dedicate x amount of weeks to a project. any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
