Are trains in France really as bad for Eurail passholders as the internetz and travel writers make them out to be?

Seriously. I'm leaving for Europe at the end of next month, starting in Germany, and will be in France mid-September. Should I be seriously concerned about not getting on a train with my pass and having to pay for an extra ticket?
