Planning my first multi-stop trip - advice needed

I recently did some travelling and met some awesome people doing huge multi-stop trips that made me super jealous I wasn't doing one. So I'm planning one. It's a fair ways off (probably next summer >_>), but I'm too excited about the prospect to leave it till later.

I'm planning to travel around Asia (departing from London, UK), with target cities at the moment including: Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hanoi, Siem Reap, Penang.

The cities are subject to change (and suggestions would be most welcome from you all), but I'm definitely finishing in Penang, and although they were originally at the beginning, I now think that Tokyo and Seoul should be towards the end, as I'm more likely to be buying stuff whilst I'm there, by comparison with other places. The main issue with this seems to be that Tokyo/Seoul are better connected international-flight-wise than, say, Hanoi/Siem Reap.

Obviously most flight-checking sites don't have dates sufficiently far into the future to cover my travelling time, but my estimates at the moment seem to be in the region of £1500 ($2500ish) for flights. Not taking into account the ideal 6-week-ish period before a flight you get the best fares.

I'm hoping to travel as cheaply as possible. Very much backpacking-type trip. It's probably not going to happen, but if I could get those flight costs closer to £1000, I'd be a very happy guy.

But aside from hashing out generally where I'd like to go, I don't really know where to start. And yes, it's probably too early, but closer to the time I'll be very busy, and right now I have plenty of time to think about things.

So yeah, tl;dr - planning multi-stop trip, where do I start, should I go to different places, halp please.
